The San Francisco man arrested Wednesday for allegedly threatening House Speaker Nancy Pelosi over her support for health care reform spent five years harassing a local church - until its custodian helped break the case involving Pelosi, the church's lawyer said.
Gregory Lee Giusti, 48, made at least four dozen harassing and threatening phone calls to Pelosi's homes in St. Helena and Washington as well as her husband's San Francisco office, authorities said.
He was linked to the Pelosi case with the help of members of the Hamilton Square Baptist Church on Geary Boulevard.
Giusti joined the church in 1999, but was told to leave in 2005 after his menacing behavior scared others, said John Jones, the attorney who sued to stop Giusti last year. He said the church regretted the move, but had to make it.
"He's menacing, he's angry," Jones said. "I have tried to convince him he should move on with his life."
After getting kicked out of the church, "He started calling - a lot," said Steve Crozier, who manages the congregation office. "He didn't say it was him. But it was him. You could hear him breathing."
Three weeks ago, Jones said, federal agents came to the church to see the custodian. They said his name was linked to a phone number used to make the calls to Pelosi. The custodian then recognized Giusti's voice on recorded calls and told the agents.
Jones said Giusti "can make phone calls look like they come from someone else's phone."
A tall, hulking man who kept to himself, Giusti was not well known - or well liked - at the federally subsidized Marlton Manor where he has lived for more than a decade, said neighbor Rose Riggs.

We've got a guy complaining about "SOCIALISM!" who lives in subsidized housing, who sometimes makes anonymous threats to the "SOCIALISTS!", and when authorities start to connect the dots, it takes them to a guy belonging to a Church that the guy hates. And that's probably what got him caught.
Cop: "You guys have any enemies?"
Church: "Yeah. Just One."
There's no way to describe this guy, he needs his own word to describe his actions...
Giusti: An action resulting from the right combination of hypocrisy, incompetence, and cowardice.
Example: "Oh, he totally did a Giusti right there! (To describe the actions of Gregory Giusti)"
