Area grandma spurs recall of lead-laced bibs
Area grandma spurs recall of lead-laced bibs

May 3, 2007
BY LISA DONOVAN Staff Reporter ldonovan@suntimes.com

A northwest suburban grandmother triggered Wal-Mart's nationwide recall of baby bibs that tested positive for high levels of lead. Last fall, Marilyn Furer of Mount Prospect bought the Baby Connection bibs for her grandson Jensen, who turns 1 this week.

Watching him chew on his bib, Furer, 65, remembered a TV news report on lead in plastic lunch boxes. She lead-tested the vinyl portion of the bib.

"It showed high levels of lead," said Furer. She notified the California-based Center for Environmental Health, which found the bibs contained 16 times the amount of lead allowed in paint.

"It's unfortunate that this little grandmother in the Midwest has to call attention to this. Where are the governmental controls?" she said.

um that's because lead poisoning just makes you less smart unless you get a really high dose. People probably just think their little infant isn't going to be an einstein :(

BTW walmart sold the lead lunch boxes as well but the gov decided it was safe levels:

3. Lead poisioning wouldn't necessarily show up for a while
and parents let their kids chew on keys, some parents still have lead paint in their homes, etc. If after a few years a child had lead built up in his/her system, who would look at the bibs from when he/she was a baby?

4. parents will just think their kids is developing a slow :(
it's not until they are really slow or really sick that most doctors would think of looking. Thank goodness the Grandmother thought to check! She has saved so many kids bless her!

5. Yes - thank goodness she thought of that
People tend to just assume that if it's available for sale, it's safe.
