You'll never believe what a wingnut aquaintence of mine just told me...
Are you sitting down?

We were talking about the Westboro Baptist bunch picketing the miner funerals. He said "Fred Phelps is a liberal Democrat plant meant to make conservatives and their values look bad."

Blink, blink.

I know how ridiculous this sounds, but what do you want to bet there are already thousands of teabagging idiots and others on that side of the fence, more than ready to believe it and are now using it as a fact?

They are two different things although the one often masquerades as the other.

A goodly number of these people are just bone stupid.

I have dealt with this exact situation. Giving people the other side of the issue forces them to rethink their sources.

It leads to a better place, little by little.

It should be fairly obvious to anyone with average intelligence that NOBODY --of any political leaning-- likes the Westboro Baptist Church.

How much time do you want to waste pointing out what should be obvious?

What can I say? Isn't every person's dream to spend their entire life doing things that will disgust most human beings simply to make a political point?

5. He is no liberal, but he has run for office in the past as a Democrat
Mostly just because the Democratic nomination for most offices in Kansas is usually worthless and not very competitive. All the action is in the Republican primaries.

He just runs for office to have a platform for his nonsense.

38. So $arah is actually a Dem?
And Bachmann? And Beck? And Steele?

I have to admit, this is (or would be) a brilliant plan! We simply infiltrate the republican leadership and replace all of the thinking people with people pretending to be hate-radio hosts, quitter-buffoons, and la-la-land Christianist wackos. The credibility of the republicans would plummet!

Phelps strikes most people as a one-off nutjob of no significance. But our plants in the republican leadership are working out great. Go $arah!

23. I've got my own wingnut aquaintence...
...I hear your Phelps comment and I raise you a bank bailout comment.

Here's what I was told--that the banks are totally innocent and the
problem is that the politicians FORCED the banks to take the bailout
money. Also, it was the politicians who FORCED the banks to make
bad mortgages to everyone. The banks didn't want to loan out money
to everyone who had a pulse...the government FORCED them to make
these bad loans and give out so many loans laced with creative
financing.

Therefore, that is why we MUST have MORE deregulation within the
banks and financial companies. We must get the government totally
out of the banks and corporations and let them do whatever they want--because
this entire financial crisis was CAUSED by the government forcing banks
to make bad loans.

I tried to explain---that the banks paid the politicians (via campaign
contributions) to get federal regulations relaxed. Then, after those
regulations and acts were relaxed--they were then free to loan to
anyone and then bundle these loans and sell them on the secondary market--where
they made billions. So...the banks PAID the politicians to make this happen.

I was told that I had it wrong. After all...Glenn Beck told them what
to think--even though it was totally preposterous, Glenn said it so it
MUST be true.

Yes, it's disgusting and even frightening to hear this nonsense firsthand.

All you can do is save yourself. Anyone who is stupid enough to get their
world view from dry-drunk, lie-mongering fool Glenn Beck--is too far gone
for any normal person to handle.

27. A shining example of inverse logic!
See, what you do is arrive at the desired conclusion before the facts are established. Then the facts are cut into convenient pieces (in woodworking terms, anything from finger-jointed to sawdust) and fitted together selectively, with glue and pressure, to reach back to the belief.
