Are Nukes Needed to Deter Cyber Attacks? Bachmann Says 'Yes'

April 08, 2010 5:11 PM

ABC News’ Matt Loffman reports:

Several Republicans have criticized President Obama for placing new limits on the use of U.S. nuclear weapons, but Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., raised eyebrows among liberal foreign policy observers by suggesting during a Wednesday rally with Sarah Palin that the American nuclear arsenal is needed even to deter cyber attacks.

"If in fact there is a nation who is compliant with all of the rules ahead of time and they've complied with the United Nations on nuclear proliferation, if they fire against the United States a biological weapon, a chemical weapon or maybe a cyber attack, well then we aren't going to be firing back with nuclear weapons," Bachmann said. "Doesn't that make us all feel safe?"

“No!” shouted the crowd of thousands in Minneapolis.

The new policy announced by President Obama places limits on the circumstances when the United States will use nuclear weapons. The Nuclear Posture Review says that the U.S. will not use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states that are in compliance with the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. Regimes like Iran and North Korea are not protected by the new policy because the U.S. says they have violated nonproliferation agreements.

1. I think it's good they give these idiots airtime.
Let people find out what that say rather than get the scrubbed-for-stupidity version from Fox News.

3. A Sad Sign Of Our Times...The Outrageous Get All The Headlines...
Used to be this type of bullshit was said by some crazy dude on a soapbox in the corner of the park; usually ranting to more pidgeons than people. But that was before the days of 24/7 cable media where inflamatory and confrontation always trump real news and reasonable discourse. Bachmann knows how to play the corporate media like a violin and keeps the crazy and outrageous flowing cause it will get played and used to "balance" anything this administration attempts to do. The GOOP game plan is to lie early and often...to get the misinformation out there through their corporate media toadies before their lies can be properly refuted ane debunked and try to force this administration on the defensive (in a wife beating defense style).

One just hopes there are a majority of sensible Americans left in this country who can easily see through Bachmann's shtick and are turned off by all the verbose and violent rhetoric eminating from her pie hole and others on the unhinged right. Through bombarding the corporate media with their shit, they also have distorted their own view of the real political landscape...and I sure hope the rushpublicans pay for it dearly in November. I know I'll be doing my part to make that happen.

4. Well I was going to post some clips from age of steel.

But getting some blockage on YouTube,

But my point is, was she making a reference to these cybermen from the age of steel?

In this clip, the fix to the Cybermen problem is removing their emotional inhibitors, I think of that as empathy blockers, those things that keep people from feeling.

There is some interesting dialog in the conversation between the Doctor and Cybermen, I agree with his comments on emotion, but not on mortality or health.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMOEV9WL7A0 -clip currently broken, but worked a few minutes before posting.

Another post of the speech of Dr. Who.

Although I don't think that is what she meant, the clip is pretty good, sometimes things are not always the best, but feeling is important and it is a good Dr Who Episode. Even if it also can have some bad interpretations.
