Missouri state budget cuts hit education hard
"In one of its biggest budget cuts yet, a Missouri Senate committee decided Thursday to eliminate state funding for a program that pays teachers extra money for after-school tutoring.

If upheld by the House, the budget cut could force public schools to either dip into their own funds or shortchange teachers for the extra hours of work they have done during the current school year."

These are not the only hits education has taken in this state, state support for higher education is also being cut, which will result in higher tuition costs. Oh, and the state is looking to cut state scholarships to private universities.

The reasons for all these cuts, a drop in tax revenues and the lack of federal funds for education. We've got money to waste on war and death, but educating our children, not so much.

A sad state of affairs when wars for oil and empire take precedence over education.

2. True that, of that ginormous stimulus plan passed last year, forty percent was more tax cuts,
They eliminated 16 billion dollars for school building and maintenance to make room for more tax cuts in a vain effort to get some 'Pugs on board. Bipartisanship is killing us.

3. They also cut the hell out of the Parents as Teachers program.
Last I heard a representative put an amendment in to use 1 million of the Lottery advertising budget to help offset the costs but still. The above OP is a perfect example of people not willing to walk the talk when it comes to education. You actually have a program which helps students learn and gives incentives to teachers for extra performance.. and you cut it.

4. Yep, the sad part is the teachers already put in the time,
This money was earmarked to pay them back for that extra time. Essentially state is breaking a contract.

Governor Nixon managed to save education last year due to stimulus money from the federal government. It would be nice to have the feds help out again, but sadly that's not going to happen, and public education is going to go the way of the dinosaurs.

It took Nixon to go to China, apparently it takes Obama to destroy public education.
