McConnell: GOP vows 'sustained, vigorous' case in court pick
By Michael O'Brien - 04/09/10 11:22 AM ET

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) pledged "sustained and vigorous" work by the GOP to press the next nominee to the Supreme Court.

McConnell congratulated Justice John Paul Stevens on his retirement on Friday, but sought to make clear that Senate Republicans wouldn't take any new nomination by President Barack Obama lying down.

"As we await the president’s nominee to replace Justice Stevens at the end of his term, Americans can expect Senate Republicans to make a sustained and vigorous case for judicial restraint and the fundamental importance of an even-handed reading of the law," McConnell said in a statement.

Stevens announced his retirement on Friday morning after joining the Supreme Court in 1975. The justice, who turns 90 this month, said he'll retire at the end of the court's term.

"Even if Justice Stevens’s liberalism has led to many decisions I oppose, I respect his devotion to the institution and the gentlemanly manner in which he always carried out his work," McConnell said in his statement. "I wish Justice Stevens and his wife, Maryan, all the best in their future endeavors."

3. Especially if Obama makes a Harvard pick
If Scott Brown wants any chance of re-election then voting against a Harvard grad/professor will definately not help

9. no chances

There can be no chances with this pick, Republicans be damned. i do not think Obama has much wiggle room. If he picks a somewhat conservative person that could be it for him. On this he has to come out and pick a progressive and stick with it. The split in the court is to close to take any chances. Another right winger and it is 6-3. be surprised if Obama screws around on this. This is also a way to show that he intends to be more progressive.

8. What so funny is this
the republicans had to change their shorts so many times, caused the messed themselves when bush appointed the two scags, roberts and alito because they screamed that the democrats weren't being fair for not dropping down and kisses the appointees a**, what right do they have to scream about anybody Obama appoints. Like the poster said he could appoint Jesus and they would say no. so kick em in the balls and go on with the voting.
