Gerald Ford nominated John Paul Stevens...
And George H.W. Bush nominated David Souter. Yet they did not vote the conservative line. How many times have we heard that?

Perhaps they voted what they thought was the correct legal decision? Perhaps they did not vote the Democratic or Republican Party line? Perhaps justice has a liberal bias, just as does the truth and reality? We don't need idealogues on the Court. We need judges.

2. We need Humanists on the court -- to support a people's government vs corporatism....
To show respect for women and the right to choose --

To show respect for labor and unions --

To show respect for the voter --

To show respect for our laws --

3. Agreed 100%.
That's why I cringe whenever I see DUers tossing around names like Rachel Maddow, Bill Clinton, or Ralph Nader, even in jest.

13. Exactly. But most of them don't even know how far they have drifted.
Or maybe they know, but don't care (like some on "our" side of the isle).

5. Perhaps the GOP chose them to keep Roe v. Wade alive
the GOP knows that sex sells. They want the RTL people up in arms, but don't want to overturn Roe v. Wade (and go back to the time when sex was just for procreation). The GOP knows that being on the other side vs. sex is a loser and work hard to keep Roe v. Wade the law of the land and at the same time cater to the RTL..

7. Or maybe the wife of the President who nominated Stevens?
Betty Ford was well-known for her pro-choice views.

9. Stevens was thought to be middle of the road republican at that time
There was a great article about him in the New Yorker a few weeks ago. He's really just a rational reasonable person.

11. Is that not the perfect illustration of how far right both parties have gone?
Both parties tend to accept Stevens as a liberal, now. His positions are, likely, just about where they always were but where once those positions were middle of the road Republican, now they are seen as 'liberal.'
