I have been reading many DUers stories about almost being abducted by pedophiles, so I thought I'd look it up.

This is how many children do not get away from these psychos.

This is a much bigger problem then 9/11.

5. not a very high percentage
Since 1984, NCMEC has assisted law-enforcement with more than 162,000 missing-child cases, resulting in the recovery of more than 148,000 children.

Since 1997, the AMBER Alert program has been credited with the safe recovery of 495 children

While I agree missing children and sexual predation are real problems, this isn't the way to go about trying to raise awareness.

Using misleading stats and phrases based on them like "This is how many children do not get away from these psychos" appeals only to emotions and insults thinking people.

7. ugly numbers
How many children are reported missing each year?

The U.S. Department of Justice reports

* 797,500 children (younger than 18) were reported missing in a one-year period of time studied resulting in an average of 2,185 children being reported missing each day.
* 203,900 children were the victims of family abductions.
* 58,200 children were the victims of non-family abductions.
* 115 children were the victims of “stereotypical” kidnapping. (These crimes involve someone the child does not know or someone of slight acquaintance, who holds the child overnight, transports the child 50 miles or more, kills the child, demands ransom, or intends to keep the child permanently.)

32. so subtracting out the 262,215 abductions we have
535,285 'other' - runaways, elopements, "I was at Kathy's for the weekend - didn't I tell you?"

A few years ago my step-daughter went missing - became a 'reported missing' statistic. Turns out she was pissed at me and her mom and convinced her friends to not say that she was at a friend's house for 5 days.

"Reported missing" is meaningless. Just a number to scare people with.

Edited on Fri Apr-09-10 12:08 PM by Brickbat
Goodness. Read the DOJ documents referenced in your link.

■ During the study year, there were an estimated 115 stereotypical kidnappings, defined as abductions perpetrated by a stranger or slight acquaintance and involving a child who was transported 50 or more miles, detained overnight, held for ransom or with the intent to keep the child permanently, or killed.
■ In 40 percent of stereotypical kidnappings, the child was killed, and in another 4 percent, the child was not recovered.
■ There were an estimated 58,200 child victims of nonfamily abduction, defined more broadly to include all nonfamily perpetrators (friends and acquaintances as well as strangers) and crimes involving lesser amounts of forced movement or detention in addition to the more serious crimes entailed in stereotypical kidnappings.
■ Fifty-seven percent of children abducted by a nonfamily perpetrator were missing from caretakers for at least 1 hour, and police were contacted to help locate 21 percent of the abducted children.
■ Teenagers were by far the most frequent victims of both stereotypical kidnappings and nonfamily abductions.
■ Nearly half of all child victims of stereotypical kidnappings and nonfamily abductions were sexually assaulted by the perpetrator.

By 'not missing at all' I meant that the incident was eventually closed without any actual criminal activity indicated. For example, found at the neighbors house playing with friend.

12. "Children reported missing" does not equal "abducted by pedophiles"
Edited on Fri Apr-09-10 12:47 PM by Gormy Cuss
Read this to get a sense of how few were estimated to be abducted in a classic stranger/danger fashion using 1999 data (the estimate was 115 out of 58,000 children reported missing in nonfamily abduction circumstances.)
http://www.missingkids.com/en_US/documents/nismart2_nonfamily.pdf

Some family abductions may also involve pedophiles but again, it's likely to be a small fraction of those abductions. Most family abductions are custody fights where children are located quickly.
Read here to get a sense of the distribution:
http://www.missingkids.com/en_US/documents/nismart2_familyabduction.pdf

You'll note that both of the above reports are linked to the same site you referenced and both are from research conducted for the U.S. Department of Justice.

15. online exploitation a growing problem
How many children are victims of online sexual exploitation?

According to the latest online victimization research,

* Approximately one in seven youth online (10 to 17-years-old) received a sexual solicitation or approach over the Internet.
* Four percent (4%) received an aggressive sexual solicitation - a solicitor who asked to meet them somewhere; called them on the telephone; or sent them offline mail, money, or gifts.
* Thirty-four percent (34%) had an unwanted exposure to sexual material -- pictures of naked people or people having sex.
* Twenty-seven percent (27%) of the youth who encountered unwanted sexual material told a parent or guardian. If the encounter was defined as distressing - episodes that made them feel very or extremely upset or afraid - forty-two percent (42%) told a parent or guardian.

37. Nobody is downplaying the problem that exists -
but many of us see that it does nobody any good to exaggerate that problem with bullshit statistics. 700,000+ reported missing is a bullshit statistic when you try to conflate that with pedophile abductions which may be one tenth of one percent of that number. More than 650,000 of those 'missing' are runaway/throwaway kids, custodial abductions, and simply 'misplaced' kids who didn't bother telling, or didn't want to tell, their parents where they were going. The vast majority are cleared up within days.

Now, the few hundreds or thousands each year that ARE pedophile abductions are a problem. But this stuff is just hysteria, like the 'satanic day care' crap of the 90s.

27. Some statistics

Nonfamily abduction 12,100
Family abduction 56,500
Runaway/thrownaway 357,600
Missing involuntary, lost or injured 61,900
Missing benign explanation 340,500

Runaway/thrownaway are when the kid has a disagreement with parents and goes somewhere else, often to a friend, relative, non-custodial parent, etc.

Missing benign explanation is when the kid goes to Billy's house after school and mom can't find him.

33. from a comment on the book written by Noreen Gosch
"We are both mothers, and our children have been abused. Noreen and I have been corresponding for over a year and a half. I know what it took for her to gather all the information and documents to present a chronologically accurate story of the darker and covert elements of Johnny's kidnapping. The agencies that were supposed to protect our children and ourselves can no longer be glorified or trusted--they never could be, but we wanted to believe differently. We wanted to believe that Efraim Zimbalist Jr., starring in the FBI, was a moral representation of the FBI. We wanted to believe that Mel Gibson was actually helped by the CIA in "The Conspiracy Theory". The times have come to expose the years of denial of what really exists. This book is not about conspiracies because there are no conspiracies, only those who attempt to hide the truth of their insidious intent and actions. It is not too late to be outraged and call for accountability! Child abuse, ritual abuse, intentional trauma-based programmed mind control, and secret, black-funded government agencies and projects must be thoroughly exposed. Noreen has risked her life to expose the truth, a path few are willing to travel; and with all this, the gift to her was gaining her peace of mind, and perhaps, someday, Johnny can really come home. I thank Noreen for her unbridled courage, and I invite all to read and share her story."
