5. I think it's more about their cognitive schema than intelligence |
|
The 2003 paper by Jost et al in Physchological Bulletin demonstrates how low self esteem and fear of loss would generate this same behavior.

my mother is a great example... she is an intellegent woman but somehow (mostly influence of fundamentalist parents - loved my grandparents though!) she has lost all sense of reality. She is right in there with all the people who believe (and have believed for 1800 years) that Christ is coming back and Barack Obama could easily be the Anti-Christ. I am so fortunate to have excaped...

It could be that many of them are capable people who have allowed anger to colonize the parts of their brain affecting judgment and insight.
They seem to be not only angry but thrilled to be angry and elevated to be angry alongside other angry people. They're so pissed off they don't even have time to proofread their own protest signs.
The more outrageous the claim against Obama or against the "Democrat" Party, the more justified the anger, and the more exulted they feel.
Evidently it's easy to manipulate anger like that. So we get Palin and Bachmann and Beck hosing the Bagger fire with kerosene on an almost hourly basis.

But the base is a dumb as rocks. The leaders know this and exploit it to their advantage.

11. Probably in the 90-100 range |
|
It's more than their below average intelligence however - they have been raised poorly - not taught the importance of live and let live and to not be jealous of what other people have.

12. I've forgotten: is IQ distribution "normal"? And how wide is its standard deviation? |
|
I'd put them about one SD below 100.

running around loose, driving cars and voting and shit are below triple digits. I am hoping we tend to represent the other half.

Actually, the calculated average IQ of the USA is 98 - we are tied with Austrailia, Denmark, France, Norway and Mongolia, lag far behind South Korea at 106.

However, if your I Q is too far below the average you couldn't pass the drivers test and you probably wouldn't be motivated to vote.
