I'd love it--and the hellstorm that it would kick off. The Right would go apeshit over an atheist judge.

11. Which is less likely - an atheist SC justice, or an atheist President? |
|
Edited on Sat Apr-10-10 11:00 AM by DavidDvorkin
It's hard to say, but they're both extremely unlikely. Extreeeeeemely.

It's my dream, but I'm sure I'll be long dead before that happens in this "Christian nation". I would love to see an atheist President, too.

16. or someone INTELLIGENT enough NOT to mix their religious views in with law |
|
I have no problems with people having personal religious views - I *do* have problems with people who use those views to decide cases on the bench.
At one time in this country people could step away from one to do the other. We've gone backwards, it would seem.

19. Exactly. Regardless of the issue, I'd like to see them rule form law--because justice |

is pretty much always going to be on the liberal side of the political fence.

18. No way would an atheist be approved for the SC in this day and age |
|
Could you imagine the pants shitting that would go on if one was even "considered"? I personally don't care about the religious beliefs of any potential nominee as long as they are intelligent and can seperate themselves from their religion when it comes to interpreting the law. And yes I think only liberals are capable of that.

21. There probably already are. It's just that declaring your non-belief |
|
can be a bar to appointment and acceptance. Odds are that more than one of these well-educated and intelligent people is a non-believer.
In my many conversations with clergy, I discovered that many of them are actually secret non-believers, too. The first one who confided that to me was a shock. The shock grew much fainter as time went by.

Despite some of the claims about the headcount by religion, how many of the justices are active and practicing their purported faiths?
