BREAKING NEWS: Menu Foods Recall Expands Dramatically Due to Cross-Contamination
May 2nd, 2007

This recall expansion covers dozens of new brands and foods — wet foods only. Menu Foods is now recalling additional foods due to cross-contamination, more than a month and a half after the initial recall. (Corrected) The recall also expanded to include 2 varieties in Europe.

Menu Foods expanded recall list at:
http://www.itchmo.com/read/breaking-news-menu-foods-recall-expands-dramatically-due-to-cross-contamination_20070502

Brands covered in expansion are listed at Itchmo. New brands are marked (New). Our recall list is now up-to-date.

Menu Foods says:

Menu Foods has previously recalled wet cat and dog food produced with adulterated wheat gluten supplied by ChemNutra Inc. Menu Foods is now expanding the recall to include cuts and gravy and select other products which do not include ChemNutra wheat gluten but which were manufactured at any of Menu Foods’ plants during the period that ChemNutra wheat gluten was used at that plant, to the extent they have not already been subject to a recall, due to the possibility of cross-contamination. Menu Foods has received a report from a customer and has received study results, both of which indicate cross-contamination.

2. Like all of you I'm sure this has really pissed me off and I think that we
all need to send a strong message to the FDA with our wallets.

My suggestion is for everyone to stop buying anything processed, it all has gluten in it. Gluten has many different forms and names and it is used not only to artificially raise the protein levels of food it is used to make things chewy and as a thickener.

As we all know from looking at food labels there are thousands of confusing ingredients that are untested chemicals added to our foods. If the public becomes aware of problems with an ingredient, i.e. MSG, they just change the name so you can no longer identify it.

The time has passed for people to refuse to buy organic whole foods because they think only radical "hippies" and "vegans" go through all that trouble. If you have children I implore you to take control of your child's health. It is close to child abuse IMO to feed them processed foods for the sake of convenience.

Buy only organic whole foods and free range meats. Make all of your condiments, breads, soups and treats from scratch. Not only does it taste better but it's a great "hobby" to spend your free time cooking delicious home-made foods for yourself and your family.

3. All very good points
I'd like to add buy locally grown and produced direct from the farmer if at all possible. In the grocery store, if there is a choice, pick the product from closest to home.

4. Organic and locally grow produce tastes so much better too.
The free range organic meats are so different in taste and texture than the commercial meats that as soon as you eat it you realize how altered the meat in our food chain really is.

It's the same with the organic milk and eggs, there is such a taste difference it is scary.

8. and COOK your own foods..make your own "mixes"
it's easy and it's CHEAP..

Amazon & ebay can hook you up with any number of HP Make-A-Mix cookbooks. I use the ones I bought in the '70's, but I'm sure the new ones are good too..

if you have a food processor, and you cook your meals, you cna make your own babyfood..for FREE.. no additives no junk.

Just season your food at the table, and you're good to go,and once you introduce chunky foods to your baby, it will be flavors he/she is already used to :)

5. gluten isn't the problem, it's melamine
Some people are sensitive to gluten, but it is a legitimate, naturally occuring protein (created when wheat and water combine)--it's what gives bread its protein value. Seitan, a protein source that one can purchase in most health-food stores, is wheat gluten (you can make it easily at home by mixing water and flour, letting it rest a bit, then washing away the starch).

The problem in all of these pet foods and up through the food chain is melamine, a coal derivative that has no nutritional value, but mimics protein in tests. It has a very high nitrogen content, which is what was causing the kidney damage to animals fed the pet food. Because of this fraudulent substitution of melamine for real protein, animals were also not receiving the nutrition their caretakers thought they were feeding them.

9. From Itchmo and ASPCA...
For all recall news, visit www.itchmo.com
For recalled foods: www.itchmo.com/recalls.html

Full details:
http://www.itchmo.com/read/aspca-says-avoid-all-non-us-protein-supplements-crisis-not-over_20070503

This is the most sweeping safety recommendation on the pet food recalls issued by the ASPCA.

ASPCA Says: Avoid All Non-US Protein Supplements. “Crisis Not Over”
May 3rd, 2007

This is the headline of their press release today: “As Pet Food Recall Expands, ASPCA Warns Crisis Not Over: More Cases May Be Seen.”

Many of you have already called manufacturers, and a recommendation from the ASPCA the same.

“We are strongly recommending that pet parents immediately investigate, via their pet food manufacturer’s Web site or by calling them directly, where the ingredients—specifically protein supplements—are sourced from.”

Given the current situation and until this crisis is resolved, the ASPCA is recommending pets be fed products containing U. S.-sourced protein supplements only.

They also recommend that your pet sees a vet if any recalled food was consumed, not wait until they show symptoms. And extend fluid treatments if the pet is found sick.

10. Wonderful Wonderful Menu Foods - Once again waiting for others to FORCE them to act
They know the melamine, cyanuric acid, and FDA only knows what else is in there. They know they don't clean properly between different foods. If they actually cared they would have been testing their products instead of recalling yet another umpteen foods for the umpteenth time! Frankly I hope they are sued out of business.

don't ever forget that menu foods ceo was head of a waste disposal company that was sued for a multitude of toxic violations:
