Note to Newt: Women really, really don't like Palin

April 11, 2010 11:43 am ET by Eric Boehlert

Noted women's rights thinker Newt Gingrich appeared on CNN recently to announce that Sarah Palin is something of a feminist icon. Explaining her appeal, Gingrich seemed to suggest that women --aside from San Francisco liberals-- adore Palin and are drawn to her unique, can-do qualities.

Except that, of course, they don't.

According to the latest CBS News poll, Palin is weighed down by an astonishingly low favorable rating among women; just 21 percent. In fact, women give Palin the lowest marks of virtually any demographic group polled by CBS.

But other than that, Gingrich appears to be dead on in his "feminist" analysis.

42. +1000. Her looks never swayed me.
What she said and did and how she'd lived and how she's "managed" her family and the job she quit for no really legitimate or logical reason (except she was hungry to make more money than she could in the public sector and/or she'd gotten word she'd be facing legal trouble as governor for some of her actions on the job). Some loud, snarky, mean-spirited, fact-challenged holier-than-thou with an unmarried, pregnant, at the time not-even-outta-high-school daughter, a husband with a traceable, suspicious, radical secessionist background, a seven-year-old parading around with a Louis Vuitton purse, and a baby with very obvious special needs who's passed around like a football in public and shoved in our faces at every campaign photo-op with the family - when that baby should be home, safe, and being well-cared-for appropriate to his special needs - CANNOT pass herself off as some role model for ME!!! No matter HOW cutesy or folksy or winky she is or how much "fancy pageant walkin'" she can do onstage! palin may be pretty on the outside, but she's horrifyingly ugly and repulsive on the inside.

99. Anyone that doesn't look within her are not capable of making good decisions.
When one doesn't recognize the problems with the woman it is not their intellect involved. Those men and women finding her favorable will do so either with their emotions as is want within their gender or for less than honorable characteristics.

2. What is it Palin "can do" again?
Her can do qualities? NO SHE CAN'T :-) raise a family, handle the position of Governor, convince anyone that she is intelligent, act as a role model in any capacity to anyone male or female, etc., etc.,etc.

That's the best the GOP can do? Newt and Palin? Sounds like a comedy team.

3. Working women especially despise her
because most working women have had the distinct misfortune into running into that type at work at least once.

She's the bird who networks and schmoozes her way into a management gig only to be completely incompetent at it, shoves her work off on the women she stepped on to get there, and blames them for being able to do it when she can't, attempting to sabotage them every step of the way.

She's pure poison and working women can spot it a mile away.

102. You mean like this?
"Often the narcissist will fraudulently claim to have qualifications or experience or affiliations or associations which they don't have or aren't entitled to. Belief in superiority, inflating their self-esteem to match that of senior or important people with whom they associate or identify, insisting on having the "top" professionals or being affiliated with the "best" institutions, but criticising the same people who disappoint them are also common features of narcissistic personality disorder.

Narcissists react angrily to criticism and when rejected, the narcissist will often denounce the profession which has rejected them (usually for lack of competence or misdeed) but simultaneously and paradoxically represent themselves as belonging to the profession they are vilifying.

Fragile self-esteem, a need for constant attention and admiration, fishing for compliments (often with great charm), an expectation of superior entitlement, expecting others to defer to them, and a lack of sensitivity especially when others do not react in the expected manner, are also hallmarks of the disorder. Greed, expecting to receive before and above the needs of others, overworking those around them, and forming romantic (sic) or sexual relationships for the purpose of advancing their purpose or career, abusing special privileges and squandering extra resources also feature."

from http://www.bullyonline.org/workbully/npd.htm

Reminds me way too much of an HR manager I used to have... I'm going thru this again, because my old job has opened up, and I have had to apply to this person, or her minions. Part (but only a part) of why Caribou Barbie gives me the willies.

I don't know why...and I don't mean to man-bash...but it takes them longer to recognize the kind of game-playing women like this live by. Maybe the lower brain rules the upper when they get winked at? Whatever it is, I know a lot of men who would have been wiser to listen to their sisters, mothers, daughters or wives (!) when such a woman crossed his path.

Not the stupid-as-fuck overpaid executives who misuse polysyllabic words to look intelligent and shirk their duties.

I've always imagined myself as no frills and nothing pretty...but I get the job done. When you're seldom the target of influence to the point that when you are it's obnoxiously obvious that they want somethings and to be friends/friendly is not one. I've actually said something along the lines of "So sorry, Fluffy. It's your job and not mine." Fake flirt all you want...I've got better at home.

She's the broad who the CEO is currently cheating on his wife with and to shut her up he gives her a management gig, which she proves to be completely incompetent at, while shunting her work off on much-more qualified subordinates and subsequently taking credit for their success while badmouthing them behind their backs.

Women who used their looks as a weapon. I remember the brash, arrogant young upstart who knew just how to cross her legs to beguile the (male - and probably horny) program director sitting across the desk from her. When the general manager hauled me in for questioning after I'd written a memo documenting multiple cases of her flagrant insubordination (I had the miserable misfortune of having this ambitious, ruthless young cutie-pie inserted into my department), he hissed into my face: "DON'T you think this young woman has ...(pause)... TALENT?", what occurred to me was - "would that be sitting or reclining?" My only regret was that I did not say that, out loud, in response. Hell, by then I'd known for some time that I was dead meat and they were looking to move her up - into my job. I'd already been working on lining up something else and I needed just one more week before I could hand in my resignation letter. Which I got. Funny enough, she didn't last that long in my job, and they never found it in their hearts to give her the satisfaction of the actual department-head title. She was referred to as "Acting News Director" for the remainder of her stay.

You mean " was over the top appalling... again!"

It's the SAME SPEECH over and over. Same talking points, same lies, same accusations... Even the same jokes.

Sarah is the idol of idiots. She's "proof" even an idiot can get somewhere if they "work the room". She's great for those types who always want to hear the same music over and over again.... or see the same movie or TV show over and over. No surprises.... no forward motion....just nice familiar, safe, same-ol' same ol'.

A complete bore.

Then there's Newty! Yikes.... what a has been! His book from the '90s "To Renew America" should be a big red flag to anyone sane.

She's all cute and sparkly and wiggly at first, and I can see the charisma she has for a certain type -- but give her enough camera time and suddenly you see that hard set to her jaw, the mean mouth that goes with the hateful things she says, and that's chilling. Sarah Palin is ugly inside.

111. I've thought that from the first moment that she made the
deliberately outrageous crack about community organizers at the Repub convention. That was clear evidence of a mean and hard streak. Her delight at how the comment was received by the "red meat" crowd and almost every word that she has uttered since have only reinforced the "hard" impression for me.
Also, as someone who is "pro-choice" to the bone, I was literally appalled by her behavior when she went into labor with Trig. I fully support whatever choice a woman ultimately makes, so long as she is not "coerced" into making it. That's my bottom line. But if she chooses to carry a pregnancy to term, then she has an obligation to behave responsibly, IMO. Under no circumstances could Palin's pre-Trig birth behavior be called responsible, and that is giving her the benefit of the doubt that Trig is actually her birth child. If that behavior does not epitomize pure selfishness and outright callousness, I don't know what does.
I am also among those outraged by the fact that Palin, in particular, actually believes that she is anywhere near in the same class as someone like Hillary Clinton, who is a warm, compassionate, very intelligent - and truly witty (as opposed to Sarah's bullying "humor") - woman. Palin isn't even fit to lick the sole of Hillary's shoes.
That McInsane could so cynically and callously select someone such as Palin to be literally a heartbeat away from the highest office in the land would have damned him forever in my eyes - except that I already knew about his deliberate headline-seeking (rather than the so-called "maverick" label that the media loved to use) behavior already and had never found anything in that behavior to make me trust him.
Sorry for the rant! But about SP's hardness, we are 100% kindred spirits. :hi:

The same women who can not/will not think for themselves, but defer to right wing fundamentalist male-dominated religions to tell them what to think and do. They see Palin as one of them. Because their men are "enamored" by Palin, then she is "safe" for their women to likewise worship.

men in their life--fathers, husbands--or what they've been told is "correct" on the "safe" media (i.e., Faux News)

But, yes, they are very outspoken and opinionated within that construct. Uggh... It is hard to say what is most revolting-- hearing the moronic, uneducated Faux News pundits and the likes of Palin and Bachman pushing these memes, or hearing the parroting and unthinking echo chamber among their followers.

Disgusting- all the way around. Is it any wonder the RETHUGS are so 'anti-education'? Keep 'em dumb and uninformed to keep their votes.

28. It seems to me that women have good reason to dislike Sarah Palin.
Palin's public persona is the "rugged pioneer individualist," the moose-guttin' mama of the permafrost, the not-afraid-of-anything gal, the outrageous taunter of the status quo.

She clearly wants to be President, but her political profile includes a strong secessionist component. Her affiliation with a group which advocates secession is documented. She is not rooted in Madison's and Jefferson's vision to know anything BUT a secessionist impulse as a political reaction. On the stage in St. Paul in 2008 she mocked the community organizing by Barack Obama. And her own commitment to the principle of public service is so fragile that she couldn't manage to complete her term as Governor of Alaska.

Most women -- and for that matter most men -- do not share a strong secessionist impulse versus their better-understood U.S. citizenship, with all its attendant responsibilities and privileges -- and most women and most men do not quit as easily as Palin quits. They don't squawk as much as Palin squawks. They don't conduct isolative, disconnected lives at a remove from basic knowledge of how things work the way Palin does. And those who are parents do not reduce their kids to theater props whenever the cameras are rolling.

In short, most women and men in the country are pulling their weight and working more or less together toward commonly-held ongoing views of a safe and satisfying landscape for their lives, for each others' lives, and for the lives of their children's children's children. They do not sense any such commitment in Palin, and with good reason, because it is not there in Palin.

some of the bitches outgrew it (and frankly, all of us had our moments) but she's still there. Being catty, being mean, saying its cool to be stupid as long as you are beautiful the men will all flock to you anyway.

Unfortunately she fell into the trap many women fall into: you can get attention by looking pretty, dressing nice, acting sexy. You don't have to perform for attention. Quit your job, buy nice clothes, say mean things about people, you'll get by.

She'll be in for a very rude awakening in 20 years when even plastic surgery can't make her pretty enuf to draw crowds.

What is it with the GOP and pretty, brainless women?

Although John McCain continues to defend his choice - maybe because he feels it reflects on him, many people in that campaign have completely turned on Palin. They have done this is in a far more open way than I have ever seen.

I would be willing to bet that Cindy McCain did not like the winking VP candidate - and might feel that McCain would have done better with a different VP. At least he might have run a less disgusting campaign.

incidental sex. Ask his wife and the several congressional pages he was banging when he divorced that wife-while she was hospitalized with cancer.

This makes him a republican expert on women.

Anybody else remember when he said women couldn't serve in combat, in trenches, because after 30 days they would get "infections"???

He doesn't know the diff between "Infection" and "menstrual period". Idiot. :banghead:

Amazing these Repuke men who tell women what to do and have not the slightest grasp of female anatomy and physiology. This includes some that are OB/GYNs like Rep. Ron Paul and Sen. Tom Coburn.
Complete idiots. Ignore the facts when it doesn't fit their anti-abortion, no=prenatal care ideology.

My wife is a conservative Republican. (She calls herself one, anyway; personally, I peg her at a slightly-right-leaning moderate Dem.) When Grampy McCain selected Iquitarod to be his VP Candidate, my wife was livid. Before then, she really liked McCain. When she found out about Palin and what a narcissistic dipshit she is, she was furious. "Did he think I would vote for her just because she's a WOMAN?!?!?" She lost all respect for McCain, and can't even look at the tv when Palin's on there.

It scares me how much blind adoration she gets from my sister-in-law (brother's wife) and the other women of her family. *shudder*

But then, their whole family is about 2 steps away from those "Quiverful" types...she's one of 5, all home-schooled, and she and her 2 older sisters are practically in competition to see who can have the most babies. They're all so proud that their mom will be a grandma six times over before she turns 50.

82. Newt is like that relative, or teacher, or friend's dad that we all have
who is so amazingly out of step. In Newt's case, 15 years behind the rest of the country. It's like when he's on The Daily Show. He tries to hard to fall into the vibe of the show, that his tone deaf fail is all the more obvious because of his painful yearning. He, like Rove, has been gloriously wrong countless times in the past few years. He's no longer the wonder boy, the know-it-all, the authority. He's a desperate man trying desperately to cling on to some kind of relevancy. He's grabbing at Palin's mini-skirted hem for dear life. Secretly, he's smart enough to know she's a cipher. But he's a man who needs someone to get him into the club. He's standing outside, the bouncer doesn't recognizer him, and then the right's "It" girl swishes by and he goes prostrate at her high-heeled feet hoping she'll let him tag along. And she will, as long as he kisses her feet and tells her she's cute.

92. Oh gawd Newt
Does this philandering partisan hack ever have anything resonant to say? I know he's an incredibly smart guy and I respect his political acumen, but he's little more than a schill for failed right wing policies these days (i.e. his hypocritical support for Proposition 8, which, as a thrice-married man, he of course knows better than ANYONE else :P).

Furthermore, glad to see the numbers from this poll are so damning. I have always been baffled why any woman with any respect for her rights would endorse her. Whereas Obama's significance to the African American community is fortified by their tendency to vote Democratic, Palin would just be an unfitting and embarrassing choice. She'd club women's rights to death with all the finesse of the cave troll from the first "Lord of the Rings" movie.

So said M. Scott Peck in his fascinating book "People of the Lie". It's a protective instinct, he said - you'll tend to stay the hell away from people you loathe, and in most cases, that limits the harm they can do to you.

I actually have met a few other people who repulsed me as strongly as Palin does. They were all dangerous and destructive in one way or another to the people around them. However, I met those people personally. Palin is the first person to make me feel this way so strongly just from watching and listening to her on the TV.

Scott is in a real pickle - he got elected as a whim in one of the most liberal states in the union. Lightening may hit once but rarely will it hit twice. I highly doubt that Massachusetts will embrace someone who associates himself with hate groups like the Tea Party.

And since it seems very likely that Obama is going to nominate someone associated with Harvard Law school, Brown can't join in with these idiots about rejecting Obama's supreme court pick. Because even Brown knows to vote against Harvard pretty much is his kiss of death when re-election comes around in 2012.

What really scares me about Brown is that he'll play the moderate the next 2 years to up his re-election changes. ANd somehow Massachusettians will buy into that rhetoric, re-elect him and trust me - he gets re-elected that guy will steer very hard core to the right.

I guess I don't really think about Palin in a substantive way. She doesn't really illicit any strong emotions from me. I wouldn't vote for her. I wouldn't want to be near her with a gun. But, as far as drawing any feelings of vehemence, she just doesn't do it for me. I'm actually very reluctant to call women dumb and stupid. I'm often surprised by the number of women who feel comfortable doing this. I can't think of any woman that I would feel okay doing that with...even republican women.

I just feel really uncomfortable doing it. Her party affiliation differs. Our politics certainly differ. She elicits a strong negative reaction from my mother, though. We had a good talk about it. And, we don't discuss her anymore. To me, it was an eye opener though. My mother has always been a very strong advocate for women and women's rights. And, I think her opinion was that Palin was not. I wish I understood more about Feminism.

This gets into some really strange gender politics for me. Some of the Hillary Clinton rants I have overheard, head into that direction for me as well.

Oh well...just keep her (Palin) out of the White House and I think we'll all be better off.

167. The woman is an embarrassment
to all other women, mothers, career women and to the nation as a whole. Why she can't recognize this is beyond me.

But hey, with 21 percent favorable rating I hope that she is the republican nominee in 2012.

191. A female acquaintance of mine specifically said that Palin was the deal-breaker for her.
Apparently, she'd have been happy to vote for McCain, but the Loose Moose wasn't something she could stomach.
