4,000 attend Tea Party's rally in Fresno
Officials sought a larger crowd, but competing events hurt attendance.

Several thousand tea party activists rallied Saturday at Chukchansi Park, vowing to change the country's political direction through their grassroots movement.

Organizers estimated that more than 4,000 people turned out for Central Valley Tea Party rally in downtown Fresno. Officials had hoped for a larger crowd, but said competing events such as Big Hat Days in Clovis probably hurt attendance.

Saturday's rally carried a distinct political theme, with conservative-leaning candidates -- or their representatives -- speaking and manning booths. Others collected signatures for statewide initiatives related to taxes and global-warming laws.

Chukchansi Park. What a beautiful venue for the Central Valley Tea Party to hold an event! >> Let's see, it was built as a tax-payer-funded municipal stadium in 2002 for $46 million. Wow! >> The perfect place for 4,000 folks to oppose paying taxes? Perhaps not.
