Has the UAW ever tried to organize the auto workers in the Southern states?

Has the UAW ever tried to organize the auto workers in the Southern states?
At the Honda, Nissan and Toyota plants? I know it would be hard, but have they ever even tried?

Maybe Omaha Steve, DU's go-to guy on labor issues, would know.

1. I know the 'right to work' laws in VA were fought in the shipyards. I think the Ford truck plant in
South Norfolk also had some issues, but it's still a 'right to work' state.

4. As far as I see the only reason Toyota is in Texas is to train its Latin american workforce,
Hire bilingual folks etc.
