anybody here from Georgia or Utah? |
|
I looked at CNN election results and they are the only states where Obama did better with the 30-44 vote then the 18-29 vote.
In Georgia McCain won the 18-29 vote 51-48-1 (%) and Obama won the 30-44 vote 56-44 In Utah McCain won the 18-29 vote 62-33-5 and still won the 30-44 vote 52-44-4.
Is Anybody from either of those states? If so could you give me an explanation as to why McCain did better among younger people there. In every other state it was the exact opposite.

I am from Utah and fit right into that 18-29 range.
Since Utah is a very LDS state, the younger population is fairly conservative compared to their counterparts from other states.
Generally, young Utahns are very good LDS, fresh off their missions (the men), just married and settling down in suburbia hell. Many will spit out five children before hitting 30.
Because of their upbringing, the fact the culture here is still very patriarchy and that leads to more conservative leanings. Women fresh out of college often leave the workforce and become stay at home moms by their late-20s.
Dare I say they're also conservative because their parents are conservative. From what I've gathered, socially, many young Utahns are liberal or at least fairly progressive. They're not nearly as anti-gay as the LDS Church and have been open to other issues.
But since it's still a culture dominated by conservative values, it leads to more conservative voting.
With that said, I'm not a typical Utahn. I grew up in a very liberal Irish-Catholic family. I was not raised LDS. I have never attended an LDS Church and I've spent my entire life in Salt Lake City - which has been pretty liberal over the years. So I can't claim to know the whole story.
Hopefully I helped, though!

5. Right wing indoctrination? |

In Utah it's the Mormons. In Georgia it's the white supremacist groups.
