Vacation, all they ever wanted….
Posted 12:36 pm

When the going gets tough, the tough leave town for a couple of months. (thanks to S.W. for the tip)

Lawmakers divided over whether to keep U.S. troops in Iraq are finding common ground on at least one topic: They are furious that Iraqi politicians are considering a lengthy break this summer.

“If they go off on vacation for two months while our troops fight — that would be the outrage of outrages,” said Rep. Chris Shays, R-Connecticut.

As the AP explained, the Iraq parliament’s recess would start in July, almost certainly without a resolution to questions about distribution of oil revenues, militias, Sunni representation, etc.

I guess this means we’re not going to meet this summer’s political benchmarks.

High-profile Republicans are calling this “outrageous” and “unacceptable”? Fine, Dems say. What does the GOP propose to do about their indignation? Give Bush another blank check to maintain the status quo?

Dems are looking for an edge in negotiations. This might help.

1. Chris: why aren't you outraged about Bush's record-setting vacationing.
You know, like the long one in the summer of 2001 right before 9-11?

2. This vacation by the Iraqis will work well for *
because he'll be off over the Fourth of July and the entire month of August and back in time for maybe a mere 2-3 weeks before General Petraeus gives his accessment of the surge. Now * will have yet another excuse for delaying an "accurate" assessment because the Iraqis were on vacation and unable to meet their responsibilities......meanwhile the war profiteers will have more time to gather the loot and another reson to be forever grateful to *.

3. The Iraqis could do like the repubs and give themselves a big...
raise too, as soon as they get back from vacation.

4. I'm still very concerned over their desire to leave
Not because I expected them to actually meet any benchmarks, but rather because I have a gut feeling in regards to their desire to be out of the country during those two months. Those are the last two months before the "surge" is to be reviewed. I'm greatly concerned as to what might be planned in Iraq during the months of July and August. I simply cannot rid myself of the impression that they're cowardly rats scurrying from a sinking ship.

5. Interesting.
Very interesting. We have every right to be concerned about the surge spilling into Iran during the summer.

6. Oh, you didn't think they were going to come back from that vacation?
If I were them, I wouldn't. I'd retire in Dubai.

7. Or, as other DUers have suggested, this will be SOP as they have
no expectation of the US leaving anytime soon. Maybe they've been assured of that.
Sigh. Who knows what to believe? We certainly won't hear any kind of truth from any voices we can hear.

8. Well they need to take a few 'personal days' and get their cash bricks into a deposit box in Zurich
got to do that kind of banking in person--and get it done before Baghdad goes up in chunks.

I don't understand the lack of sympathy I'm sensing here.
