Huckabee On Gay Adoption: 'Children Are Not Puppies'
Huckabee On Gay Adoption: 'Children Are Not Puppies'
Rachel Slajda | April 12, 2010, 9:19AM

Presidential hopeful and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee (R), in an interview with a college magazine, said the country shouldn't "experiment" by allowing gay couples to adopt children.

"I think this is not about trying to create statements for people who want to change the basic fundamental definitions of family," Huckabee told The Perspective, a magazine at The College New Jersey. "And always we should act in the best interest of the children, not in the seeming interest of the adults."

"Children are not puppies," he said. "This is not a time to see if we can experiment and find out, how does this work?"

Huckabee also compared gay marriage to drug use, incest and polygamy.

3. better that the kids end up in foster care with people who may not be gay
but are only taking the kids for the money and may abuse them or ignore them, right!!

and i am not saying all foster parents are like that. i personally believe that these 'christians' have a rude awakening waiting for them when they die. i believe in god, and i believe that they are going to find out just how much this behavior of theirs will help them get to heaven... or not.

5. We don't have to experiment
it's already a part of our society and working just fine thanks.

I don't get these people, really I don't. Far better for a child to be raised in an institution than with loving parents who might be - gasp - of the same sex.

8. As an adoptive parent, albeit straight, of both a kid and dogs
I find Huckabee's comments on same sex adoptions and marriage to be totally without merit. Children and puppies both need good homes. If those good homes are with straight parents, that's fine; if those good homes are with same sex parents, that's fine too. The operative word in adoptions is "good" not "what sex are the parents". As Bugs Bunny so aptly commented "What a maroon!".

Call us America's sweethearts
We found a place in Roxbury
Where we can meet the mortgage
Go to church on Sunday
I teach Communion class
And David leads the choir
Ten years together, thinking 'bout children

Lots of children out there
Beat up, beat down, hoping
For a home and a harbor
A hand that doesn't hit
Where the form said "Father and Mother"
We had to cross it out
Father and Father, that's David and me

Twelve months of waiting
Suddenly two little boys on our doorstep
Scared and crying
Gave them a bath and tucked them in
Three-year-old Jamie
Little brother Scott
Jamie had a bruise like a boot in the middle of his back

Love is love
No matter who no matter where
Love is love
And a child knows when it's there
They can pry away the fingers
That graced these walls with dirt
They can pull us apart
They can lie, oh, they can hurt
But love leaves a trace
And the heart holds a place for love's return

McDonalds and K-Mart
Do you know how hard it is to find kid's shoes?
Scott's first hair cut
Grinning and a little confused
Outside the aquarium
Baseball jackets red and blue
A picture is like time standing still

Jamie was a scrapper
He punched his brother, decked the kid next door
He threw a plate at David
Then ducked and cowered, waiting for the blow
After supper I held him close
"You're safe here, this is your home"
And the rains came to the parched and broken earth

The papers smelled the headlines
Gay parents, two little innocent boys
TV news on the front porch
Politicians made a lot of noise
Liberal governor, he gave the order
Social worker phoned - "Have them ready at three"

Picked Jamie up at day care
Kids were running, shouting as they played
We didn't want to tell him
Maybe the Governor could have explained
Jamie was screaming
When we strapped him in the welfare car
David said "We love you" and they were gone

You find out who your friends are
Some came round, some just let it go
Rallies on the common
People singing people saying no
This is crazy
But Scott and Jamie
Are still pinballs in a busted machine

Kitchen's clean and quiet
We changed the furniture around
Still keep Scott's rabbit
In the middle of the night sometimes I wake to the sound
Of a little one crying
When there's nothing there at all
David holds me, says "Go back to sleep"

Love is love
No matter who no matter where
Love is love
And a child knows when it's there
They can pry away the fingers
That graced these walls with dirt
They can pull us apart
They can lie, oh, they can hurt
But love leaves a trace
And the heart holds a place for love's return
The heart holds a place for love's return

14. Oh, this brought tears to my eyes.
I am horrified by the fate of all the Jamies and Scotts in this country--and I know from experience they are legion. To think they were taken away from loving parents for such a reason saddens me beyond words. Shame on those who perpetuate this ugliness!

Blessings.

.... "found Jesus" so they can kill people.

BTW his own son tortured and killed a dog.

As Mike Huckabee gains in the polls, the former Arkansas governor is finding that his record in office is getting more scrutiny. One issue likely to get attention is his handling of a sensitive family matter: allegations that one of his sons was involved in the hanging of a stray dog at a Boy Scout camp in 1998. The incident led to the dismissal of David Huckabee, then 17, from his job as a counselor at Camp Pioneer in Hatfield, Ark. It also prompted the local prosecuting attorney— bombarded with complaints generated by a national animal-rights group—to write a letter to the Arkansas state police seeking help investigating whether David and another teenager had violated state animal-cruelty laws. The state police never granted the request, and no charges were ever filed. But John Bailey, then the director of Arkansas's state police, tells NEWSWEEK that Governor Huckabee's chief of staff and personal lawyer both leaned on him to write a letter officially denying the local prosecutor's request. Bailey, a career officer who had been appointed chief by Huckabee's Democratic predecessor, said he viewed the lawyer's intervention as improper and terminated the conversation. Seven months later, he was called into Huckabee's office and fired. "I've lost confidence in your ability to do your job," Bailey says Huckabee told him. One reason Huckabee cited was "I couldn't get you to help me with my son when I had that problem," according to Bailey. "Without question, was making a conscious attempt to keep the state police from investigating his son," says I. C. Smith, the former FBI chief in Little Rock, who worked closely with Bailey and called him a "courageous" and "very solid" professional.

12. so I suppose natural children of gay parents should be taken away too?
What about single parents? What about back butt fugly parents and profoundly stupid parents?

I don't believe that republicans should be allowed to raise children OR puppies.
