Polish president Lech Kaczynski killed in plane crash

All 96 passengers, including top Polish officials, dead after presidential aircraft crashes in thick fog

Luke Harding in Moscow guardian.co.uk, Saturday 10 April 2010 13.10 BST

<snip>On Wednesday, Poland's prime minister Donald Tusk attended a joint ceremony at Katyn with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin. Kaczynski, who had poor relations with the Kremlin, was making a separate trip to the spot.

Russia's president Dmitry Medvedev said that Putin would head a special commission to investigate Kaczynski's death and the circumstances of the crash. The emergency services minister Sergei Shoigu was also rushing to the scene at Severny airport, about 275 miles west of Moscow, on Medvedev's instruction, Interfax reported.

3. Not any ex-KGB agents I would trust to head an investigation on anything
Their job description included knowing how to lie convincingly.

4. They've already announced it's pilot error.
The pilot disobeyed air control orders not to land.

Here:
Andrei Yevseyenkov, spokesman for the Smolensk regional government, said Russian dispatchers had asked the Polish crew to divert from the military airport in North Smolensk and land instead in Minsk, the capital of neighboring Belarus, or in Moscow to the east because of the fog.

While traffic controllers generally have the final word in whether it is safe for a plane to land, they can and do leave it to the pilots' discretion. Air Force Gen. Alexander Alyoshin confirmed that the pilot disregarded instructions to fly to another airfield. The Smolensk airfield is not equipped with an instrument landing system to guide planes to the ground.

"But they continued landing, and it ended, unfortunately, with a tragedy," Alyoshin said. He added that the pilot makes the final decision about whether to land.

6. Same here
His involvement demonstrates Russia's commitment to finding out the truth. Any suspicion that that gives him the power to subvert the findings is ludicrous, given the broad participation in the investigation. In short, for would-be conspiracy theorists, there's no "there" there.

7. Doesn't surprise me, but even the most conspiracy-minded investigator would find this one was pilot
error, IMO.
