3. No, I totally disagree -- he's not competent to manage anything.
And Walmart, unlike the Texas Rangers and the U.S. Government, is not owned by Poppy.

11. I get nuts when people say "he OWNED the Texas Rangers".
He was part of a group that 'owned' 2%. He invested $600,000 which somehow became $14.5 million when he sold.

9. He'd actually be one of those drunks that qualified for disability.
He wouldn't have had the incentive or means to have stopped the downhill slide after being dishonorably discharged from the military. After a DUI or two wouldn't have had a car or license.
At best he'd put his brush clearing skills to use in peoples yards to scare up enough money to stay drunk. He'd be one of those guys you see shuffling along the side of the road carrying a half-rack of cheap ice beer.

19. Were he not a son of wealth and privilege, he would have had a very hard time.
I don't know what he would have become-he seems to have few obvious skills, and I don't recall his having any hobbies or interests. He may have become a factory worker of some sort, whatever factories they may have in the Houston area, nothing too technical, maybe a fork lift driver in a warehouse or some such thing, unloading trucks.

I think his drinking would have kept him marginally employed, and his lack of ability and reasoning would have made even that fairly difficult. I also think he may have fallen into minor crime, not through evil intent, but through stupidity and drunkenness.

If he found religion, he may have stopped drinking at some point, but he would be at least middle aged by then. If he continued drinking he may already be dead or on disability or institutionalized.

Money made all the difference to him.

mark
