Boortz, others blame VA Tech victims for not fighting back

In the April 18 edition of his daily program notes, called Nealz Nuze and posted on his website, nationally syndicated radio host Neal Boortz asked: "How far have we advanced in the wussification of America?"

Boortz was responding to criticism of comments he made on the April 17 broadcast of his radio show regarding the mass shooting at Virginia Tech. During that broadcast, Boortz asked: "How the hell do 25 students allow themselves to be lined up against the wall in a classroom and picked off one by one? How does that happen, when they could have rushed the gunman, the shooter, and most of them would have survived?"

In his April 18 program notes, Boortz added: "It seems that standing in terror waiting for your turn to be executed was the right thing to do, and any questions as to why 25 students didn't try to rush and overpower Cho Seung-Hui are just examples of right wing maniacal bias. Surrender -- comply -- adjust. The doctrine of the left. ... Even the suggestion that young adults should actually engage in an act of self defense brings howls of protest."

4. Uh, Neal, they weren't lined up against a wall. They were hiding under
desks, which is something Neal would be doing. It's easy to talk tough behind a microphone in a radio station.

7. Be careful with that
He's got a history of announcing people's names on the radio that send him nastygrams. He put my email address on his blog about 8 years ago, after I called him on one of his many factual inaccuracies.

11. Something's starting :) Here:
Delegates call for boycotting talk show host for Tech stance
The radio personality referred to the "wussification of America" and asked why students did not retaliate.
By Mike Gangloff

Three members of the Virginia House of Delegates are calling on radio stations to drop self-described "Talkmaster" Neal Boortz after his comments that Virginia Tech students should have done more to defend themselves.

"Mr. Boortz's hateful comments should have no place in this Commonwealth, particularly at this trying time," says a letter that Dels. Jim Shuler, D-Blacksburg; Steve Shannon, D-Fairfax County; and Chuck Caputo, D-Fairfax County, sent Monday to the eight Virginia stations that carry Boortz.

Starting the day after the April 16 killings of 32 people on Tech's campus, Boortz began asking why students didn't fight back against shooter Seung-Hui Cho.

"How in the hell do you line students up against a wall (if that's the way it played out) and start picking them off one by one without the students turning on you? You have a choice. Try to rush the killer and get his gun, or stand there and wait to be shot," Boortz says in the April 17 program notes on his Web site.

Other commentators have expressed similar thoughts, and gun advocacy groups have suggested that if students and staff had been allowed to carry arms at Tech, someone might have stopped Cho before he killed so many.

Boortz, a libertarian, expanded his question into a larger "wussification of America" theme and said the political left had indoctrinated young people to be passive.

6. How does he know some of them DIDN'T rush the gunman?
That is the strangest part of this entire line of argument. It's quite possible that some students - currently DEAD students - did, in fact, attempt to disarm the shooter, and ended up dead in the effort. So, not only are they killed in a valiant effort, but they are subsequently insulted by know-nothing jaw-waggers like Boortz for not having been valiant enough. Boortxz has no idea what happened in those classrooms.

9. I hate to admit it, but that was my first thought as well.
But I then realized that I was thinking through my own experiences and not the lack of experience of those students.

Those kids had to be petrified by fear and disbelief.
