Italian airports closed today. Spain airports have been open through the current crisis, but the cloud is approaching Barcelona.

At those latitudes, the prevailing wind is from the west. Any movement of ash to the west is due to turbulence and eddys in the atmosphere.

18. Volcanic Ash is highly fertile
Lots of farms get set up near volcanoes despite the inherent risks of living next to one since the land is superb for farming.
