6 Myths About Poverty in America, Debunked
6 Myths About Poverty in America, Debunked
by Charlotte Hill April 13, 2010 01:46 PM (PT)
http://uspoverty.change.org/blog/view/6_myths_about_poverty_in_america_debunked

With partisan bickering and punditry around every corner, it's easy for insignificant details like facts to get lost in the commotion. But have no fear — statistics from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) are here!

The OECD is the invitation-only country club of international organizations; only 30 countries are members, and they're the cream of the crop: the Old Europeans (Italy, Germany), the Nordics (Norway, Sweden), the Wealthy Westerns (United States, Canada) and the Rich Asians (Korea, Japan), with a few wild cards thrown in for fun.

For economists, policymakers, researchers and the like, the OECD is a goldmine of reliable information. It constantly collects data on every aspect of its member countries, developing comprehensive "factbooks" for public review. Using data from the 2009 Factbook, let's examine some of the common myths perpetuated, most often by conservatives, about poverty in America.

#1: The United States has one of the lowest poverty rates in the industrialized world.
Nope, sorry. At about 17 percent, the U.S. actually has the third-highest poverty rate of all the OECD countries, coming in only slightly ahead of Turkey and Mexico. Denmark boasts the lowest poverty rate, an inspiring five percent.

#2: Income inequality isn't a big problem in America.
Incorrect. Unfortunately, the U.S. still has above-average income inequality, joining the likes of Poland, Portugal, and, once again, Mexico and Turkey. Is this any surprise? After all, in 2006, CEOs of large U.S. companies made more money in a day than average American workers made throughout the year.

#3: Due to our exquisite health system, Americans live longer than residents of other countries.
Wrong, once again. The average life span of an American is below the OECD average, right above the Czech Republic. Of course, rich Americans can still expect to live to ripe old ages; an average wealthy white woman, for example, will enjoy 81.1 years of life. The average life expectancy for her poor, black, male counterpart, on the other hand, is only 66.9 years.

#4: Okay, well, due to our exquisite health system, the U.S. has a lower infant mortality rate than other countries.
No. In fact, out of all the OECD countries, we rank third to last in terms of infant mortality. But at least we get to hang out with our good friends, Mexico and Turkey, who once again join us at the losers' table.

#5: At least Americans don't have to spend as much money on health care as people from other countries ... right?
The truth is quite the opposite. Americans spend substantially more on their health than people from any other OECD country. Over 15 percent of the national GDP is spent on health care; Switzerland, the closest contender for most money spent on health care, only comes in at 11 percent.

#6: The U.S. spends more money on helping the poor than any other industrialized nation.
This is perhaps the biggest myth of all. At about 16 percent, the United States ranks fourth to last in public social expenditures as a percentage of GDP, beating only Turkey, Mexico and Korea. On the other end of the spectrum, Sweden spends about 29 percent of its GDP on public social expenditures.

Change often comes slowly .... and always starts with one.

I have not shared your experience; however, I am fully aware that it truly comes down to "the roll of the dice" ... I am simply grateful for the life I have ... understanding that I am not more or less "worthy" than any one else ... simply luckier than those less fortunate.

75. Let's not confuse liberals with "liberal" media.
"Liberal" media is a flattering self-portrait promoted by our corporate mainstream media which, in reality. is anything but. The fact that Fox, hate radio, and all the other right-wing crazies constantly harp against the "liberal media" doesn't mean it actually exists outside the confines of their paranoid, hate-filled little minds.

Olbermann, Schultz, and Maddow are also at the mercy of a corporation, MSNBC, and the corporations who control it.

I'd like to see our Congress and president discussing poverty like it was real rather than a campaign issue.

122. DUers need to start a letter writing campaign
If we all emailed shultz or olbermann on the same day, maybe they would take notice.

The numbers of people homeless, in poverty are growing and it is clearly visible in large cities as well as small towns.

It seems that our media is going out of their way to not cover it, meanwhile pumping our 'recovering' jobless economy.

I am seeing stories in our local paper, about homeless students trying to survive and finish high school, people dying while sleeping outside, one man climbed into a trash can to keep warm and an employee not knowing he was there turned on the trash compactor when he got to work.

If you are seeing suffering people in your town and no one is talking about it, call the local media and ask them to cover it. New homeless camp going up, crowds of people on the corners looking for work, families being thrown out of their homes...whatever it is, we can at least ask the media to cover it. Many times they are just kicking back waiting for the next AP story about tiger woods to print, but there might be actual journalist out there that want to write a real story.

126. Very good point, happy! A little action on our part can go a long way!
That was the point I was making.. WE aren't applying the pressure, and our "progressive" media aren't taking the lead on this.

We either do more, or just accept that more and more people will suffer, and as you point out, die, from the inaction.

Could you post some of those news stories you have come across locally?

Thanks! :pals: :yourock: :pals:

137. "Local media" I sent this article to a columnist with the local paper.
He reported on Friday about the 2,400 homeless *school* children in the county I am in. (That's SCHOOL children... not counting infants and toddlers!)

I hope he makes use of the information in future columns. If I had support here, and others also pressured him, it would make a difference.

That is why I am suggesting NATIONAL media. We can gather together people from all over. Locally, it is harder. Unless you know a lot of activists where you are.

3. Here's one more: the poor pay no taxes.
Absolute rubbish, of course. Anyone who works in America pays payroll taxes, and anyone who spends money in America pays sales tax. My state has a $1000 exemption per person, so if you make more than a grand in Illinois, you pay state income tax. Then there are other taxes, like on gasoline, electricity (oh, yes, if you have an electric bill take a look), cable TV, telephone service and so on. This is related to the myth that the rich pay an "unfair share" of the nation's taxes.

on everything we all use, meaning that the bulk of them are paid by that impoverished 80%.

The root cause of poverty is hoarding by the few and nowhere is that more obvious than in this people's paradise, the US.

8. Right you are.
But try explaining that to the average cognitively-depraved Faux viewer, or to even members of a town council, and you get this blank stare, with a thin line of drool running from the side of their mouth, or an argument that makes your brain recoil in your brain pan to the back of your head, where it lies in a small, compressed mass, whimpering and quivering in abject horror.

And where do the frothingest of them come from? Megabux retirement sprawls.

My generation. What a bunch of useless-as-tits-on-a-boar-hog lot, to an all-too-large degree. Filled to surcease with a "I don't owe nuthin' to nobody and fuck them and the horse that they rode in on" mentality. And loud as hell about it.

Taken as a whole, it is all quite embarassing.

9. Not only do you pay taxes on electric and natural gas but if you don't use enough NG in your home
you get charged a delivery fee, here in Michigan thats an added $35 to your con sumers bill. I sat in my house freezing all winter trying to keep my heat costs down, I managed to keep my gas bill down to $14 to $20 a month so con sumers added a delivery fee of $35 making the gas bill as much as $55 which they then added tax to bringing the final gas charge to over $60. Being poor and disabled in America sucks.

We have been doing our own energy diet on a total electric house.
We have cut our power use by almost almost 3/4, 3300+ kilowatt hrs to 1200kwhrs. We should be down to about 700kwrs or less.
I am disabled and on ssd and partners income has gone down Again thanks to blue cross blue shields rate hikes.
The power company has added more fees, so we went from 450$ bills to 140 the fee hikes it to $170. We also switched from using the old power hungry heat pump to a single small kero heater that fuel has gone from 1.60 a gallon to 3.50 a gallon, it drops to 3.30 in summer. Our power is mostly from coal fired plants. We take advantage of solar gain on sunny days I can skip the heater.
We have been buying the inexpensive (relatively) led lights at sams club one or two at a time.

Those so called Christians and their churches that have them believing that God wants you to be rich is totally opposite of what JC said..what is that called? Prosperity Gospel? Murikkka is f''d up.

It's all over. Anyone can learn this if they want to know it. And therein lies the rub; these bastards don't believe or even truly understand "rights," but they cherish their own perceived right to ignorance.

Freedom of speech doesn't necessarily require one to know what one is talking about.

Rachel?

Thom Hartmann?

Ed Schultz?

If the big names in liberalism don't talk about it, then HOW do we think that other people even have an inkling?

WHY aren't we demanding those names make this into a big deal?

How do we get people to KNOW this in their bones, and to get pissed enough about it to take action?

WHY aren't we taking information like this, and doing MORE with it than posting it on a forum where EVERYONE should already know this?

23. A modest suggestion
I favor the direct distribution of flyers as opposed to attempts to reach a target audience via the internet. There are too many special interests vying for our attention on the internet, and important messages tend to get lost in the sauce. I've been reaching out with flyers, brochures & pages of printed text at laundromats for many years now, as I believe it's the most efficient place to reach the greatest number of people living in poverty. I've encountered problems with management at convenience stores and small grocery stores in impoverished neighborhoods, but I've never had a problem leaving literature lying around in a laundromat.

Do they only include Medicaid and Welfare in that? They call it "public social expenditures", which for the US, is most of our GDP, if you include Social Security and Medicare, which is basically welfare for the elderly. It would be interesting to know how they define such things in their study.

32. Not only that but this SS & Medicare as 'welfare' is backwards
They've used the 'surplus' payroll taxes over almost 30 years to fund all their projects and keep income taxes low on the wealthy. The 'welfare' has been going from us to the top and now they're pushing the 'SS and Medicare' are broke' meme cause they don't want to pay it back.

welfare isn't a dirty word. We also pay into welfare for the poor, and if you were ever to become poor, you'd benefit from that social safety net. The majority of our social safety net is for the elderly in the US, which might be part of the problem.

Cop a clue -- those folks PAID INTO the program. They CONTRIBUTED -- it's NOT a handout. And Medicare -- they pay for that EVERY MONTH out of their Social Security.

119. Welfare is not a handout...
And FOX news never calls Social Security and Medicare what it is, welfare for the elderly, for a reason. Their viewers, who are largely older, benefit from these programs and don't view them as "socialist" or a social safety net. But that is exactly what it is. The sooner the truth is put out about it the better.

It always makes Repubs heads spin when I describe it like that. Even though we all pay into it, many never realize its benefits unless they make it to 65. Same with welfare for the poor. If you one day fall into poverty for whatever unfortunate reason, that social safety net will be there for you that you paid into.

It is a redistribution of wealth for the elderly. And I'm fine with that, but I like to be blunt about it to Repubs who have no real understanding of socialism or "welfare".

we weren't well off growing up. We were lucky in that we always had a roof over our heads. But we did no people much worse off then us. I remember when we put up a family, who happened to live in an old bread delivery truck, for a week. Besides this, she volunteered in the local soup kitchen and brought us along to pitch in. It makes you appreciate what little you do have, and helped me to realize what a great woman my mother was.

my grandfather escaped Appalachian coal mining by becoming a minister. I learned a lot from my grandparents also. Funny story about the grandparents- they rarely had the luxury of meat for dinner, and when they did it was chicken. Until the day he died, I never saw my grandfather eat chicken, he flatly refused. The closest he ever got was turkey for thanksgiving. I was born in '68, my father was a Viet Nam vet. Like many, he had trouble getting decent jobs during the 70's. Then, of course, the ultimate asshole (Reagan) came along. As far as my mother goes, she was a great person- I wish I was half as good as she was. My youngest sister works for a homeless shelter doing building maintenance. She could make more money in the private sector, but she is the one who is most like my mother.

40. the poor
Nice, their are a lot of miseducation about the poor. I didn't even know a lot about the challeges that face the poor until i took a class on poverty in america during college. Liberatarians and Conservatives try to make it sound like the poor are lazy. This stems from a history of racism when bigots would try to suggest that blacks and hispaics were lazy. This is not true however, most poor work full time jobs and some even work two jobs, but are unable to pay for their living expenses because the min wage is not at a livable rate (at least 10/hour). The problem becomes worst if you add kids in to their monthly payments. Single mothers have it the worst of all, because they are forced to either choose between making a income or taking care of their children. Once again conservatives will say something to the extent of "well poor people shouldn't be allowed to give birth to children".

Most of us if not all of us will be without income once in our lives, either a lay off or something else. But it won't effect us that much because we have our net worth to get us out. That being the finicial support from our parents, a love one, or selling our car or house to make up for the debt. Thus we can get out of poverity quite easily. The poor don't have those same option, some come from abusive families that refuse to support them.

Second of all, conservatives like the Heritage foundation will say that the poor have it better in the USA then any other nation. That simply because the poor have a microwave and TV they have it better then any other person in a poor country. This is not true the poor in america have no programs and little help from the local governments to get them out of poverty. Most of programs they do have are not well funded not to mention they usually find discrimation from some of these social workers. A poor white person gets treated a lot better then a poor black person going to these agenices.

I truly feel that the Democratic Party is not aware of or is not acknowledging the fact that so many Americans are suffering and living in poverty right now. If the Democrats are to win the next election, they need to start reaching out to the newly poor, unemployed and foreclosed on.

Generally when people are poor, someone likes to point the finger of blame. However this time the economy is affecting everyone. So many people are disillusioned they will not be voting at all in the next election, thereby handing it to the Republicans...House, Senate then the presidency. WE cannot afford to let this happen.

I pray that you begin to do something to reach out to the poor, homeless and hopeless in this country.

One suggestion would be to offer and pressure President Obama to provide some kind of low income housing. Millions of people, including children!, are homeless meanwhile millions of homes are being foreclosed on. This stupidity is not escaping the American people. You can be the one to suggest a common sense solution such as the government purchasing homes on the auction block and converting them to low income housing.

Please, the American people need you. If the Democratic party doesn't do something, who will?

Here is her email address: Rachel@msnbc.com

I like her show and find her to be a very responsible and responsive individual. From what I understand they do read the email.

We need to get more visibility on these issues in America. I feel many in America are not being well represented.

65. For people who don't know what OECD is:
It stands for Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development and it consists of 30 member nations, all western "developed" economies. These are usually referred to as "peer nations" because the are participants in western market-economy.

It makes sense to compare the United States to these countries and not, say, Somalia. The similarities in markets and economic culture (generally what we are talking about when we speak generically of "western" countries) make such comparisons have meaning.

If you take the top 20 OECD nations (which makes a lot of since to do because they are the biggest economies, and thus the examples have even more credibility) you actually get even worse US statistics.

Of just the top 20 countries, the US has the #1 worst income inequality, the #1 highest poverty rates, the #1 worst infant mortality rates (and these are comparing live births only between nations, #1 child poverty rate, #3 elderly poverty rate of all countries.

98. The homeless and hungry in our society
I live in southeastern arizona near a large military base. The military housing on post is being demolished and new housing built, the old houses were in very good condition, but someone decided to demolish and replace them, what a waste of money. We should be doing more to feed and shelter the needy instead of feeding the greedy contractors and their enablers. In the military town just outside of the post,I hear some of the citizens complaining about the homeless asking for help,it grieves my heart to hear the fat and sassy old hags and the retired military with their pensions looking down their noses at the less fortunate among us.I am reminded of that old saying"But for the grace of God ,go I".

99. R & a morning Kick
Seriously, folks, we don't want to be in the company of Mexico when it comes to poverty comparisons. I'm not about to make those comparisons, because saying one country's poor has it worse off is counterproductive. However, I will say that I've noticed more kids and moms on the streets in the good ol' US of A lately, and this was something that, until recently, I only saw in Mexico. Ridiculous. RIDICULOUS! How is this acceptable?

Wait, it's not.

128. yes, there are mothers with babies walking the streets homeless now
Meanwhile our legislators argue about how many millions to spend on this building or that...or how man billions to spend on this war or that...trillions wasted and 'lost'...and they cannot do anything to help us little people? It would take so little to help too...

135. There are also old ladies homeless. In a reasonable society, that is not OK.
IN the US, the old ladies are blamed.

PROGRESS!

139. How is it acceptable? Its just not sexy enough to actually AGITATE about.
I mean, its not like you can put on a cool costume, travel across the country and party with 100,000 of your closest friends.

Its down and dirty, seeing suffering and death upclose....yup, kinda like a war.

Who goes to a war for fun?

105. Many people that proudly call themselves 'middle class' are poor themselves and don't realize it
They complain about the poor. They complain about why nothing is being done about those of "US" in the middle class. They freak out when you point out to them that according to Labor Statistics, for a family their size and their income, they are at the poverty level. Conservatives are great at this. "I'm middle class!" Sure, you are. You qualify for food stamps, nimrod! I can see the wheels turning in their heads even as they're yelling that they'd never accept them. Of course you wouldn't. Who doesn't need extra money and help in this day and age? They're running to their Toyotas to get to Human Services by the time I get home. Is that being insensitive and stereotypical of me? Hell, yes! Give it to me, DU'ers. I stand by my words!

120. The infant mortality one
I've known about for sometime and is the the one I supremely disgusting, given those bullshit 'pro-life' cretins. But even in this excellent short article you posted, our maternal death rate is not mentioned in these statistics and absolutely should be.

"With a lifetime risk of maternal deaths that is greater than in 40 other countries, including virtually all industrialized nations, the USA has failed to reverse the two-decade upward trend in preventable maternal deaths, despite pledges to do so"
http://www.amnesty.org/en/news-and-updates/usa-urged-confront-shocking-maternal-mortality-rate-2010-03-12

The income disparity can be further broken down by gender and race. There are other statistics that indicate a ailing culture that accepts and perhaps encourages or embraces poverty, prison statistics, for instance.

124. there are things that I consider missing from this, too.
Like the fact that Barbara Ehrenreich sites that economists tell us that to keep our economy healthy that a minimum of 4% unemployment is necessary. THAT is also a very important fact.

Being homeless myself, I wish that it had included myths about homelessness!

However, what works so well about this article is that it is short, to the point, and makes the points very clearly.

THAT would lend itself well to be used in many different ways.

127. Yes
I read somewhere that Capitalism itself relies on a certain amount of unemployment and poverty, a kind of ebb and flow that doesn't take into account human suffering, merely relies on it. I'm not sure where I read that or if it's true, but looking at the rates and the state of institutionalized poverty, I have a hard time doubting it.

I have a friend who works with homeless folks though some agency(her dream job, she says--she's been there)She puts up with with exactly no shit if someone is disrespectful about the homeless.

What's kind of bizarre, if you think about it, it that the word "homeless" is part of our culture, without a second thought. You say "homeless" and the first reaction is oh. yeah. homeless, followed by whichever convenient myth, as you say, in entrenched in out national conscience.

Not the appropriate reaction which should be, How in fuck in the US (or anywhere) is ANYBODY, ever allowed to get to the state of not having the basic need and human right of simple shelter?

I would be most grateful!

I looked at my Ehrenreich book today, and can't find it without rereading the whole thing.

I would really appreciate your help on this! :yourock:
