DU'ers that haven't watched Food Inc, be a good DU'er and please watch it.
It is dangerous to allow corporations to patent food, to patent crops, and to patent seed.

Monsanto Corp has patented the soybean seed industry and now owns soybean farming in America.

Enjoying the taste of ethylene gas ripened vegetables?

Cardboard flavored tomatoes are fucking great.

Why are chickens 40% larger and reach maturity/slaughter-size about 40% faster today than chickens grown in the 1950's?

I watched Food Inc on netflix instant watch. But, for those DU'er who can't afford that option does anyone know of another option so people can watch Food inc?

Food Inc will blow your fucking hair back. I'm bald and it still happened.:hippie:

Peace
UY

1. Good movie.
You can rent it on iTunes for $4, or even better your library might have a copy for free.

17. It's still on HULU...
I started watching it a few days ago, and had to stop, it was just too frikkin' depressing.
About 20 minutes in, I could tell that it wasn't going to tell me anything I didn't already know, so I stopped watching.

But, yes, you can watch it for free, on HULU.
Right now, if you want...

11. It is not "hard to watch" in case people are worried about that.
There really aren't many graphic visuals of factory farms.
I hate looking at gory pictures too, but Food Inc presents it in a way that is watchable.

22. Great point. It is very watchable even for sensitive people. Like me =).
They held people's sensitivity in high regard when they made this film. I have a ton of respect for how they kept that in mind when they made this film.

Thanks for pointing that out.

I can't shake those images, and they wake me up at night.

25. I fully understand and stuff like that bothers me too.
They really take peoples sensitvity to that seriously in this film and the filmmakers made a great effort in making it watchable. I too can't stand to see animals suffer and that kind of thing.

Peace

I have it set to DVR :) but it wasn't called "Food, Inc." But I saw Michael Pollan in the description. Weird, but okay.

33. Family farmers are near and dear my heart.
I'm the son of a bankrupt farmer. Bankrupted in the 80's under Ray-gun when family grain farming went under.

Democrats really need to bring back the family farm and bust this mega-corp farming supermonopoly kill-the-little-guy system of factory farming. This party used to pride itself in being pro-family farm. I want that Dem party back.

All the best to you and all family farmers.

It's about megacorporate control of our food sources. Fascinating from start to finish. Highly recommended.

35. I know how you feel.
It took me a couple of days to calm myself after getting my eyes opened. I've started calling and emailing electeds. It helps the anger subside to let some politicians know how we feel about it. I urged every pol that I've called or emailed to watch Food inc.

Pols need their eyes opened and the pols responsible need to be voted out.

Keep your chin up.

that we moved to The Woods in 2006, and started growing our own.
Health Issues aside, we would have done this if only for the taste.

Avoid Pre-Packaged, Factory Produced food-like substances.
Grow your own.
Buy in bulk.
Cook at home.

40. Me and my dh changed our life after the 2007 pet food recall
some of our animals took a hit in that. Which is when I started home cooking for them, saw their health restored, and began researching deeply online about what was likely in our food as well.

Where we are now - we still raise our own cattle, have it slaughtered here on our land, and know exactly what they eat and how they were cared for (no hormones, no antibiotics unless necessary, but it hasn't been yet, graze on native grasses and hay if the snow gets deep).

Grow a garden every year, even growing some things indoors (tomatoes still producing inside - YUM). What can't be grown in my immediate climate, we get locally - ex: can't get fruit to grow on our high desert land , but a town called Kimberly a bit down the road is in a little micro-climate that has allowed orchards to flourish. And we can pick our own right off the trees, to eat, to freeze, and make my apricot brandy:)

I also buy in bulk - basic food items. Not a pre-packed box of ingredients, just the root ingredients that I need for scratch cooking, without the need for additives or preservatives. I continue to weed out items that I find useful, but that I can't assure myself that they are not tainted somehow, either from a stealth ingredient or an unhealthy processing method.

While my choices are now more limited, whatever I do make from scratch or take from my garden or pastures for dinner is so much better tasting that I am content having quality, rather than variety quantity. Esp. because I believe that convenience foods can kill or seriously impact health.

Haven't watched Food Inc (I'm on dialup, so hope to catch it sometime on PBS or FSTV). But I am living a post-Food Inc style life.
