(Mexico) 10-Year-Old's Pregnancy Puts Her at the Center of the Abortion Debate
10-Year-Old's Pregnancy Puts Her at the Center of the Abortion Debate

A battle is brewing in Mexico. A 10-year-old girl there is 17 1/2 weeks pregnant, raped by her stepfather. He's been arrested, but the battle is just beginning. You know, the Big One. The one about abortion.

While abortion is legal in Mexico's capital city, it's banned or significantly restricted in most of the country's states. The girl's home state of Quintana Roo allows abortion in cases of rape -- but only during the first 90 days of pregnancy. The 10-year-old is about a month beyond that.

Yes, this will be a big battle. Politicians will get involved. Churches. Parents. Abortion rights supporters. Abortion rights opponents. I can already hear their battle cries.

But this is a story about a little girl. A little girl who was raped by her stepfather. A little girl who probably can't understand her pregnancy. A little girl who may not be able to comprehend an abortion or being a mother.

1. That is just horrible.
That poor little girl.

She needs to have that pregnancy terminated, NOW.

There is no way she is ready to be a mom...

Not physically, not emotionally, not intellectually. Not in any way.

2. There should be no question in the case of a 10-year-old girl who was
raped...this is why any laws banning or restricting abortion are such a bad idea...one of the MANY reasons, I should say.

4. You would think that even the most strident anti-abortion activist...
...would agree that an abortion for a 10 year old should be acceptable. There's a large chance that this pregnancy will kill her.

5. A 10-year-old has physically entered puberty, to get pregnant in the first place?! wow :(

There is no way this child is going to be able to physcially carry and deliver a baby. Not to mention the emotional scars all this will cause her, that poor girl!

Our poor girls today, entering the woman stage of life way too early physcially. Years ago this was rare and it seems like it's occuring earlier and earlier. Its scary.

That stepfather needs to be punished severely for this, that poor girl.

10. They should require the death penalty for the rapist in these type of cases.
As long as they don't allow abortions.

Personally, I would turn away if they death penalty the person even if they allowed an abortion.
