Boneheaded Idea: Giving Fido A Bone
FDA Says No Bones From Meals For Dogs

If they only knew, dogs from coast to coast might be howling over this advice from the government.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a reminder to consumers Wednesday to toss out bones from their meals rather than feed them to their pets.

"Some people think it's safe to give dogs large bones, like those from a ham or a roast," said Carmela Stamper, a veterinarian in the Center for Veterinary Medicine at the FDA. "Bones are unsafe no matter what their size."

The FDA spelled out 10 reasons it's a bad idea to give doggie a real bone.

Among them: broken teeth, mouth or tongue injuries, bones or fragments of bones getting stuck in a dog's esophagus or even its stomach, which might require surgery. Bone fragments also can cause constipation.

3. Cooked bones are the problem not raw bones. Cooked bones splinter and shatter.
They can puncture and stick in your pets organs.

5. I have two dogs, one can have bones, even chicken bones because
he chews his food thoroughly, even the little kibble bites, he chews. The other dog wolfs, she only gets the mallow filled beef leg bones. I buy them from the store and low bake for about an hour, but not to the point of being splintery. There are leg bones around here that are going on two years old meaning that they are right for chewing on and not so much eating.

7. We don't give our dog bones now, but

canines evolved doing just that-eating bones, gnawing them clean. I think it depends on the bones configuration, the size of dog and the size of the bone.

We used to give our maltese a little cross section bone from a ham. We knew it would only take her seconds to clean out the inside and gnaw around on it, then we would take it away, much to her consternation.
