What does the GOP want???
Edited on Thu Apr-22-10 10:11 AM by samplegirl

Matt Steinglass referees the financial reform politicking:

If we don't see a deal very soon, it indicates one of three things. First, the Republican concerns may be more substantial than previously reported, in which case someone with more expertise than Mr McConnell needs to explain what they are. Bob Corker, for example, has illuminated some of his party's specific grievances, but even he sounds optimistic. Second, Republicans may still be testing to see whether killing a Democratic bill by painting it as too friendly to Wall Street is a politically viable option. This seems less likely now, as Mr McConnell has toned down his "back to the drawing board" rhetoric. Finally, Republicans may be trying to figure out what sort of face-saving public concession from Democrats would be sufficient for Mr McConnell to cast a bill as a Republican victory over the administration. If that is the case, perhaps Democrats can help them along by offering to publicly growl "Foiled again!" Or whatever it takes.

3. They don't know
Seriously, they're just winging it. They're doing such a piss-poor job of it, and Democrats are always so damn panicky, that we're certain they have to be pulling a fast one.

it never occurs to our Reps that maybe, just maybe, the folks across the aisle are... well, maybe they're just fucking dumb.

I know, right?

4. It occurs to me that people on BOTH sides of the aisle are dumb
and so is the public. Everyone with an i.q. higher than a rutabaga knows that modern politicians are career politicians, not idealistic "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" types. There is no requirement that they have any natural intelligence; all they need do is be slick enough to pull the wool over the eyes of the local yocals. Chuck Schumer, for example, is a bright enough man but he has obviously decided not to go to Wall Street (at least not directly) but go to Congress instead. Some of the others seem about as bright as a worn shoe but they come from states where SAT scores are apparently in negative numbers.

So, anyway, don't just look at just the GOPukes for stupidity. There's more than enough to go around.

and attract attention while expending as little effort as possible, which seems to be standard operating procedure for them.
They have nothing to offer but hatred for Obama because he is a smart, black Democrat.
If they won, they would not know what to do next.

7. They really have no "philosophy" or reason to be a political party
Edited on Thu Apr-22-10 02:30 PM by old mark
other than a desire for wealth and power. They have no real concept of working for the good of the people or improving life in our country.
They want to be rich and feared and have control over the rest of us.
I believe that pretty much IS the entire republican mission since Newt Gingrich.

8. They want to be back in the majority. They are not going to make any effort
to work with Democrats and will do whatever they can to stall or block any legislation put forth by Democrats. They were sore winners and they are really sore losers.

10. A former law professor is leaving them all in the Stupid Pile.
They hardly knew what to do with Clinton, good break for them he got a blowjob (Repuke know how to play to their bases lust for porn). HOWEVER, Obama really has put them back into the Dunce Bin. I believe they are too confronted by intelligence and cunning to know how to handle it - just look at their recent attempts - Sarah Palin, Fox News/Tea Baggers; to me they are lost without a paddle or a map.

12. to retain their criminal profitable empire while the guards continue to look
the other way as they spend these ill gotten american citizen dollars on their personal enjoyments without having to be honest about the real reasons they fight so hard to keep the power and great wealth they periodically received from deceiving those they call their base and those that have no choice but to come along for the ride..

15. This financial reform bill is the GOP's "Sophie's Choice" and dems
didn't do it to them..it is just how things turned out. The GOP under Rove was notorious for giving democrats a sophie's choice (giving democrats a choice between two options both of which will deminish the chooser). If the GOP backs the financial reform bill they go against their real base (the rich elites) or if they fight it they risk loosing their political base (wingnuts and teabaggers). Either way it is a loss for them.
