God I hate our media. It's not a bailout you assholes
Edited on Thu Apr-22-10 10:11 AM by no limit
I was watching The Daily Rundown on MSNBC this morning. Their lead story was wall street reform. They had their washington correspondent, who is supposed to be a true reporter, reporting on the republican opposition to the bill. He said that the republicans are against it because of bail out provisions in the bill. In addition I was watching a local NBC affiliate before that and their report also explained republican opposition this way. These were not part of commentary, these were actual news reports.

Why does our media work in such a way that if a republican makes something up they repeat those lies without pointing out that they are inaccurate or outright false? By explaining that republicans are against this bill because of bailout provisions they simply not telling truth, these are not bailout provisions.

This is what the business dictionary defines as a bailout:

A bailout is an act of giving capital to an entity (a company, a country, or an individual) in danger of failing in an attempt to save it from bankruptcy, insolvency, or total liquidation and ruin; or to allow a failing entity to fail gracefully without spreading contagion.<1>

With this bill the entity in question would not be saved from bankruptcy, the entity would be disolved. And none of this money would come from the government. Yet the media repeats this lie without actually pointing any of this out. I am so sick of these assholes.

I mean look, all you have to do is go to factcheck.org:

http://factcheck.org/2010/04/the-bailout-bill/

Do these so called "reporters" not have a thing called the google? Or do they know they are lying to the american people, and they simply don't care? This is one of those rhetorical questions.

/end daily rant

2. The right wing has ordered the media to call it a bailout.
You know, the people who are really running the show.

3. They don't call out lies. That's not their job.
Right, David Gregory?

The Meet the Press host, as quoted by Glenn Greenwald:

Several months before he was named as moderator of Meet the Press, David Gregory went on MSNBC to categorically reject Scott McClellan's accusations that the American media failed to scrutinize the Bush administration's pre-war claims. Gregory vigorously praised the job which he and his "journalistic" colleagues did in the run-up to the Iraq War -- the period which Salon's Gary Kamiya called "one of the greatest collapses in the history of the American media." Proclaimed Gregory, with a straight face: "Questions were asked. I think we pushed. I think we prodded. I think we challenged the President. Not only those of us in the White House Press Corps did that, but others in the media landscape did that." Most revealingly of all, Gregory said:

I think there are a lot of critics who think that . . . . if we did not stand up and say this is bogus, and you're a liar, and why are you doing this, that we didn't do our job. I respectfully disagree. It's not our role.

So, when these people spread GOP lies, they're doing so because they believe it's merely their job to report what the GOP is saying. It is not their job to find out whether what the GOP is saying is a bunch of B.S.

4. YYesterday Andrea Mitchel (of all people) did a pretty decent job
with the Pub she was interviewing about the WS reform. She actually stopped him in mid sentence to correct him on the "bail out" phrasing. She told him it was NOT a bailout, that the $$ was going to come from the banks and only be used to close the failed institutions down.

Dylan Rattigan did a decent job with that story too.

7. Connecting the dots in our oligarchy
Wall Street tells their Republican employees what they want > Republicans take their instructions to Frank Luntz for wordsmithing >
Luntz creates "permanent bailout" canard > talking points are delivered to Fox Propaganda > other corporate-owned "news" outlets pick up the BS >
three weeks later we are talking about "permanent bailouts" which do not exist.

What a system.
