Next month marks the 50th anniversary of the birth control pill
Young boomers were taught at home and in many schools that abstinence was 100% effective if followed diligently. However, “diligently” was difficult, if not an impossible practice against raging hormones.

Then in 1960, the first birth-control pill hit the market and the fun began. Next month marks the 50th anniversary of the birth-control pill in the U.S. The dawn of dependable contraception not only ended the post-war baby boom, it also ignited the sexual revolution and helped millions of women to enter the work force.

but did you know that at its onset, they were only available to MARRIED women? They were discussing this on television this morning.

Now, tell me - what sense did that make?

1. Because in the good ol' days

Unmarried women never had sex. Things were perfect back then, with Republican Dwight Eisenhower in the White House, and 'Leave It To Beaver' on the TV.

You must have learned your history from a non-Texas-published textbook. :P

3. I had a conversation about the Pill with women who were in college in the 1960s
Quite interesting. It seems at that time doctors would only give the Pill to young married women. Young single women in the college dormitories would pass around a wedding ring, tell the doctor that they were married to a college student, and weren't ready for a child till they graduate. The doctors knew they weren't married but they didn't really care.

6. Remember, until a 1965 SCotUS decision, in many places, *NOBODY* had the right to birth control!

7. I'm glad it exists.
It gives women more freedom.

And as a male, I've benefited from it.

13. Yes but
the pill was also very effective for regulating irregular periods, alleviating cramps and clearing acne. Needless to say, all the girls in my senior class had one or all of those three afflictions.

and I've told my two daughter's who are now in their 30's that you had to be married to have birth control prescribed for you, and they looked at me like I was crazy. I tell them now to never take this for granted, because there are still the forces out there that think it is a form of abortion and women should not have access to it, and they never sleep.
