9. The more I think about it, bartering could actually work really well
It depends on who is doing to bartering though. Imagine a city asking a doctor to treat its people in exchange for a house in the country club, a mercedes, full college for his children, homecoming queen for his homely daughter, etc.

Why? Well it creates a finite standard of living in exchange for a community service, while spreading that burden out amongst the residents in a progressive manner. The problem is that poorer towns get worse doctors (so maybe bartering at the state level isn't a terrible idea).

The point is that it would remove a middle man who is only looking after their own profits and putting perpetual upward pressure on prices.

For the most part though, people prefer dollars over goods. And unfortunately, they prefer it in a manner that doesn't put a finite ceiling on what they can accumulate

14. It also creates the great potential for abuse as well.
A doctor can hold great sway over a broke parent with an ill child. And that doctor could request sexual favors in return for treatment.

If there's a doctor shortage in the area, the parent may have no other choice but to service the doctor.

Bartering can work on a small scale, but it certainly isn't adequate to address the deficiencies in our health care system. And unfortunately there are doctors who will use their position as a means to abuse those that are the most vulnerable.
