Mounting a defense against SEC charges of securities fraud, Goldman Sachs has hired former White House counsel Greg Craig, Politico reports.

Craig, who resigned from the Obama administration in January, brings close connections to the Democratic Party along with impressive legal credentials.

As a defense attorney, he represented such high-profile clients as former CIA Director Richard Helms and John Hinckley, who attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan.

As a Democratic insider, he served as an adviser to President Bill Clinton, Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Craig is now a partner at Skadden, Arps. Politico writes that he will have a major role in Goldman’s counter-offensive against SEC charges that the firm knowingly marketed an investment that was intended to fail.

In a conference call today, in which the company reported first-quarter earnings of $3.46 billion, general counsel Gregory Palm denied the SEC allegations.

“We would never intentionally mislead anyone, certainly not our clients or counterparties,” Palm said. “We certainly had no incentive to design a transaction that was designed to lose money.”
