Conyers:What the Veto Means
The President's reckless veto will put more soldiers in danger. It also patently ignores the will of the American people. Bush often says that the polls don't drive his decision making. It's all well and good to say that, but the polls that matter drove his party out of power last November. It's long past the time where digging in one's heels demonstrates strong will and good leadership.

Given the overwhelming opposition to the President and the wide majority of Americans who want to see our troops come home, this latest gambit in power politics yields big losses. Our brave soldiers and their families are again called upon by this President to yet further tours of duty, for longer periods, often without the necessary equipment and training.

Declarations of progress and promises of impending success fall on deaf ears. No one believes that just one more new general, or one more new plan, is going to make a difference. From the looting, to the firing of the army, to housing Americans in Saddam's palaces, Iraq has been a disaster ever since "mission accomplished." One more year, one more month, or one more day will not change things.
