Bolivian president says eating chicken turns men gay
The president of Bolivia has said that eating chicken turns men gay.

Evo Morales told a conference on climate change: "The chicken we eat is loaded with female hormones. So, when men eat it, they tend to deviate from their manhood."

He added that he only eats non-genetically modified chicken to avoid becoming gay or effeminate.

President Morales' remarks angered one of Argentina's gay groups, which questioned his logic.

The president of the Argentina Homosexual Community campaigning organisation, Cesar Cigliutti, told AFP: "It's an absurdity to think that eating hormone-containing chicken can change the sexual orientation of a person.

1. Wrong on all counts.
Not that I'm defending eating chicken. Just defending facts from stupid people.

*leaves with reputation intact*

10. Where's the quotations?
Evo: "The chicken we eat is loaded with female hormones. So, when men eat it, they tend to deviate from their manhood."

Sounds like a bad translation. Hard to say what the original phrasing was. Natural hormonal balance would have been more appropriate. BUT, Note the quotes.

He added that he only eats non-genetically modified chicken to avoid becoming gay or effeminate.

Where are the quotes? There are none. Evo never said this. Either the staff writer at Pink News made this up or its a talking point ditto sheet from Otto Reich/Ileana Ros.

And why did he bring this up at a climate change conference?

Remember the fake Chavez quote about the earthquake machine that was actually from the Russian navy? That went viral, too.

First comment reads like a funky agenda driven translation.

Second comment (the gay one) isn't even in quotations.

When it comes to fair reporting on Latin American lefties who are part of the resistance to US hegemony, chances are slim to none.

9. Not so fast...
Morales' government also gave Bolivia a new constitution that included anti-discrimination provisions that encompass gender, gender identity, and sexual orientation. These provisions did not exist before. Moreover, this new constitution recognises Bolivia as a secular state whereas its predecessor had recognised it as being officially Catholic. I agree that the remarks are bizarre and ignorant, but it's ignorant to envision Morales as the next Lech Kaczynsky or Robert Mugabe. The progress made in Bolivia is remarkable given that the climate is much more conservative and reactionary on social issues than in places such as Canada and Western Europe.

On the balance, LGBT Bolivians have gained substantial ground under Morales' socialist government and have rights that many LGBT Americans still lack.

delegitimize Morales. Or maybe he just said something dumb. You seem to be straining to make this statement okay, for some reason. Personally, I could give a damn about Morales either way. I know he's been good in some ways, but that doesn't mean he can't hold some silly ideas in his head as well.

And just because someone supports gay rights doesn't mean he's completely comfortable with homosexuality.

60. It means what it says
Deviating from being a man, losing your virility -- that in no way can be interpreted to mean, "turns you gay."

Whoever dreamed up this interpretation is trying to make some kind of connection with being gay and the lack of virility. And there is no connection, whatever, except perhaps in the minds of homophobes.

On the bright side this could always be used as a way to end cruelty against chickens. Tell the Right Wingers that eating chicken makes you gay, and they won't touch another chicken again - ever. Well, unless it's to cast the demons out of them.

86. Exactly - Time Magazine explains:
"When we talk about chicken, it's pumped full of female hormones," Morales said, "and so when men eat this chicken, they stray from being men" (literally tienen desviaciones en su ser como hombres in Spanish). The comment went over non–Spanish speakers' heads, so it wasn't until sundown that it rippled its way through the 35,000-participant gathering. By the next morning, the international press had gotten wind of it, Bolivian newspapers had plastered it on their front pages and Spain's national LGBT federation had issued a statement calling the comment "homophobic."

The Morales government swears he meant no harm. "He made no mention of sexuality," the Foreign Relations Ministry said on Thursday, April 22, in response. "Rather, he said that eating chicken that has hormones changes our own bodies. This point of view has been confirmed by scientists, and even the European Union has prohibited the use of some hormones in food," the government asserts, citing studies that have shown that sexual hormones in food can cause genital abnormalities in boys

http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1984064,00.html#ixzz0m9crX2XW

However, that defense on the one issue isn't meant to imply he's great with gay rights. He pushed through a ban on gay marriage - although he still advanced gay rights somewhat by also pushing through a ban on gay discrimination. Don't ask me how those are compatible, but it seems like his attitude is not so different from Obama's (all for equality - so long as we remember some are more equal than others).

Morales was elected as a man of the people, it becomes easier to understand how some of the people think. In spite of how much venom South American Socialists have for BigOil, BigAgri, BigPharma, BigBovine and BigChicken now is not the time for Evo to have said anything on this subject. As I can see a time when RW goof ball doctors here will be demanding *organic* chickens to pay for our HC which is already being impacted by Evo's *organic* cocoa leaves flooding the streets of America. Which Evo is perfectly good with. Ultimately, Evo Morales is meddling into the internal affairs of El Pollo Loco and it must be stopped

44. By the same token, women who eat a lot of "female hormone laden" chicken
should never go into Menopause.

Well so much for that piece of shit idea.

Eating all the chicken I do hasn't turned me into the nubile sprite I was at the age of 25.

78. Exactly, which is why
I refuse to do HRT, even though Menopause really sucks sometimes.

I see so many women having to deal with the side effects of HRT that it's almost not even worth the trouble. For me, anyway.

46. Evo is a big supporter of gay rights!
Somebody's got it in for Evo--and the candidates are...?

1. CIA, U.S. State Department

They are really pissed that Evo opposed their tawdry climate change dictate.

2. U.S. war profiteers

They are really pissed that Evo kicked the corrupt, murderous, failed U.S. "war on drugs" out of Bolivia.

3. U.S. based multinational corporations

They are really pissed that Evo controls one of the largest lithium deposits on earth.

4. The white separatists in Bolivia

Far rightwing nutballs who, into the 1960s, were still forbidding Indigenous people to walk on the sidewalks, and tried to secede from Bolivia in 2008, and take Bolivia's main gas deposits and facilities (Bolivia's biggest resource) with them--aided by the U.S. embassy and the DEA. (They failed and have it out for Evo.)

5. All the rightwing/fascist forces in Latin America...

...who fear the Indigenous or mixed race poor majority, of which the hugely popular Evo Morales is an excellent representative.

6. All multinational corporate profiteers and their corpo-fascist press...

...who HATE the reforms in Bolivia--health care, pensions, education, citizen participation, people benefiting from the resources, clean elections, equal rights--because they curtail multinational corporate power to bully, bribe and exploit poor countries.

-------------------------

I had thought that the U.S. forces who hate Evo had given up trying to sully and topple him, a) because Bolivia doesn't have that much oil (compared to Venezuela and Ecuador--the main victims of CIA demonization), and b) because their initial try failed (and was associated with serious scumbags-- murderers, racists). And I saw some things (for instance, a pro-Evo news article from the New York Slimes) that made me think that maybe they were trying a "divide and conquer" strategy, to try to split Evo and Bolivia off from Venezuela/Ecuador and the Bolivarian Revolution, by fawning over Evo and the Indigenous miracle in Bolivia (peaceful rise of the Indigenous majority, rather like South Africa). I guess I was wrong. This is the kind of slimebaggy thing that they do to Chavez and Correa, devised in Langley's dark corners. What a triumph--to turn one of the most progressive groups in the U.S., the gay community, against one of the biggest defenders of gay rights in Latin America--Evo Morales! This is dark and devious stuff. Please--PLEASE!--beware of it. If this is CIA-generated, it's intended for yours and others' UNCONSCIOUS minds. It is aimed at overriding conscious thought, reason and facts, and creating a general, fuzzy IMPRESSION of Evo as stupid, prejudiced and anti-progressive. (They tried the same tactic on Chavez with regard to the Jews in Venezuela, but the Jews in Venezuela fought back and said it was absolutely false that Chavez is anti-semitic.)

If it's a flub by Evo, write him a letter. He is VERY open-minded. Don't revile him to others. That is not fair, considering what this courageous man has done for gay rights in Bolivia and Latin America.

But I strongly suspect a "dirty trick"--that this is being deliberately mistranslated (just as with the Chavez incident) and opportunistically promulgated everywhere, to create a bad IMPRESSION, because Evo is now on the CIA shit list.

Can you find any evidence of his supposed homophobia BEFORE he challenged the United States by holding a huge climate change conference that was attended by activists, politicians and journalists from all around the world?

84. I wonder if he was talking about Premature Thelarche and Early Sexual Development
I remember reading an article about this in MS magazine in the 1970's. That article was about children starting puberty at extremely early ages - some as young as 2yrs old. In addition, some of the boys also developed female characteristics such as enlarged breasts. The article postulated that U.S. agriculture was injecting poultry with even larger than usual amounts of hormones and selling them in Puerto Rico and that this could be the cause.

I couldn't find that article on a quick search, but found more info.

Premature Thelarche in Puerto Rico
Since 1979, pediatric endocrinologists in Puerto Rico have detected an alarming increase in the number of patients with premature thelarche (Pérez, 1982; Bongiovanni, 1983). Among the hypotheses proposed to explain the observed premature sexual development in this US Caribbean island territory, the most controversial theory associated thelarche with the subject's diet. Sáenz et al. (1985) suggested that dairy and meat products were contaminated with anabolic estrogenic chemicals, which are used for increasing muscle mass in cattle and poultry. In 1985, studies conducted by the US Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with a scientific commission from the Puerto Rico Department of Health, led to the conclusion that no abnormal levels of the suspected chemicals were present in the approximately 800 samples of meat and dairy products that were analyzed (Montgomery, unpublished data). Other theories are still under consideration, such as the association with ovarian cysts, premature endogenous production of sexual hormones, and environmental contamination by pharmaceutical waste products. These theories do not establish a strong association with the majority of the cases reported (Freni-Titulaer, et al., 1986). Also, a genetic predisposition of Puerto Rican girls for developing premature thelarche is unlikely. Investigation of this ethnic group in the Philadelphia area did not reveal a similar pattern of early sexual development (Freni-Titulaer, et al., 1986). Moreover, other ethnic groups living in Puerto Rico are also affected by the condition (Freni-Titulaer, et al., 1986).

In 1987, the Puerto Rico Department of Health created by law the Premature Thelarche and Early Sexual Development (PTESD) Registry in response to the observed increase in cases (Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, 1989). This is the only world registry created for the study of premature sexual development in a human population. The objectives of this surveillance system are to define the epidemiologic, clinical, and etiologic aspects of the different manifestations of premature sexualdevelopment on the island. Although the registry was established in 1988, retrospective data to 1969 and prospective data to 2001 have been collected. In this time period, approximately 7,600 cases of premature sexual development have been registered, of which 70% are premature thelarche cases. Based on the data accumulated by the registry, the estimated annual average incidence rate of premature thelarche in Puerto Rican girls 6-24 months of age is eight cases per 1,000 live female births from 1984 to 1993 (Bourdony, 1998). This incidence is, to our knowledge, the highest ever reported. Compared to a study conducted in Minnesota (Van Winter, et al., 1990), this estimated incidence of premature thelarche in the Puerto Rican female population is 18.5 times higher. The actual incidence is much higher since only the cases diagnosed by some of the pediatric endocrinologists practicing in the island are being recorded by the Registry. The other 30% of registered cases consist of premature sexual hair, strong (apocrine) odor in both sexes, vaginal bleeding in females and prepubertal enlarged breasts (gynecomastia) in males. No studies have been conducted to define the clinical, epidemiologic, etiologic or prognostic characteristics of these conditions.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/17/science/17puberty.html?fta=y
At the annual Pediatric Academic Society meeting in May in San Francisco, they presented a report that described how a preschool-age girl, and then her kindergarten-age brother, mysteriously began growing pubic hair. These cases were not isolated; in 2004, pediatric endocrinologists from San Diego reported a similar cluster of five children.

It turns out that there have been clusters of cases in which children have prematurely developed signs of puberty, outbreaks similar to epidemics of influenza or environmental poisonings. In 1979, the medical journal The Lancet described an outbreak of breast enlargement among hundreds of Italian schoolchildren, probably caused by estrogen contamination of beef and poultry. Similar epidemics in Puerto Rico and Haiti were tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the 1980’s.
