LINCOLN — Fremont appears headed for a midsummer showdown about whether to crack down on illegal immigrants in the city.

The Nebraska Supreme Court cleared the way Friday for a special election on a petition measure to bar Fremont residents from hiring illegal immigrants and from renting living quarters to those who can't prove their citizenship.

The election could be held as early as July, according to Fremont City Attorney Dean Skokan.

“We will act in accordance with the mandate,” Skokan said. “I don't anticipate any further legal action.”

The election would add Fremont to the list of places that have tried to step in where the federal government has failed to act on dealing with immigration issues.
The court ruling came as Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer neared a deadline to act on what would be the nation's toughest local immigration law.

The measure would make it a crime under Arizona state law to be in the country illegally. It also would require local police officers to question people about their immigration status if there is reason to suspect they are here illegally.
