John McCain and Republicans Determined to Permanently Alienate Latino Voters

Senator John McCain's recent embrace of border walls and Arizona's draconian immigration enforcement bill would seem shocking -- that is, if we hadn't already seen this play before. His erratic and fanatical flip-flopping on the issue of immigration has become so legendary that it's a wonder the news media still covers it.

We first saw it during the 2008 Presidential campaign trail, when Senator McCain would pledge to Spanish language audiences his undying support for comprehensive immigration reform. Then in the afternoon, he'd get on mainstream airwaves and promote border walls and massive deportations.

Before that, in 2005, 2006 and 2007, Sen. McCain made his support for comprehensive immigration reform one of his "maverick" issues. He proudly touted the smart policy benefits of the "three-legged stool," a comprehensive reform package that would truly end illegal immigration by coupling immigration enforcement with earned legalization and a controlled system to bring foreign workers to the U.S. in the future.

What happened to that bold Sen. McCain? ..........(more)

1. He's not a maverick anymore. His soul has gone into the dark side.
"Queen Esther" would be proud.

2. I can not understand why any person of latino/hispanic descent
would want to vote republican...even the most conservative Cubans in Florida must get the idea the GOP does not respect them at all...

I am hoping we can vote the republicans out in November as much as possible despite our own internal differences.

5. The guy who owns the restaurant in town was an undocumented worker until Reagan gave him amnesty
He is a staunch Republican and thinks the Republicans can do no wrong because Reagan gave him his citizenship. He feels like he owes them.

6. My Brother in law is a Tex Mex- whose family has been in Texas before Texas was a state.
He is also a republican and thinks W. will someday be revered a one of THE great presidents.

Other than that, he is a very smart man.

most votes from the bigots. He's a two-faced liar. And his judgment is also so poor he unleashed Palin on this country.

McCain is a dinosaur gasping for air. His time has passed.

4. McCain is a dead man walking.
He will never again have a voice on the National stage. The rabidly extreme Republican party has left him far behind and his petulantly nasty presidential campaign has lost him the respect of Independents and Democrats.

All he has left is his day job. He had two choices. He could retire like a gentleman with some vestige of self respect or he could go all in and betray everything good he ever stood for another term.

I hope he fails. He deserves to have his words about this bill shoved right down his pandering gullet.

8. Yeah they should keep it up
That tide will turn against them in the South. I fully expect more southern state crazies to try the same thing. You just wait for it.

I was never a republican but this has certainly opened some eyes for people who have been quite for too long.

10. I hope so, but I've been shocked before by the gullibility of the American voter
During the 1980 campaign, the more I saw of Reagan, the surer I was that the majority of voters found him as laughable as I did and that Carter would be reelected in a landslide.

I felt the same way about Bush in 2000. Even though he didn't really win, I was astonished that he got more than, say, 20% of the popular vote.

11. Prop 187 California
This is huge. I hope bigger than the backlash of Prop 187 in California. The tide will turn on this one.

You're right that a lot of voters are not very reactive to things they should be. Lots vote against their own interest time and time. The parties have them pegged as single issue voters and they play that up.

This plays very well into the Republican racist hands. The whole problem with the economy was illegal immigration after all. :sarcasm:

It's a cheap ploy to distract angry Americans from the banks stealing the country blind. But it won't last as a distraction and it only paints them as being the party of anti-brown and anti-black and frankly anti-color.

9. alienate and intimidate
On the one hand, this is going to drive Hispanic voters from voting republican -- but it's also going to be used to try to keep them from the polls in the first place, for fear of the hassle they'll have to go through.
