I've been out of work for just under 7 months. Yesterday, I landed a job at a local homeless shelter that provides for the recently homeless. In addition to providing shelter and meals, they have rehabilitative facilities and programs to help people get back on their feet. I'll be doing their fund raising and marketing. The pay is a 40% cut from my last job, but it's a very worthy mission and it is a job.
BTW - I know it's tough out there, but I'd urge everyone who's out of work to stick to it. I applied for this position months ago and heard nothing. Three months later, the shelter re-listed the job, asking for new applicants. They actually said "if you have already applied for this position, please not do send your resume again." Well, I took that as a challenge, so I DID re-send my resume. That sticktoitiveness paid off - turns out they called me the second time around because I had the nerve to resend, even after they said not to.
So, don't take "no" for an answer. Take it as a challenge.
I'm feeling very fortunate right now.

18. I wish you the best. I've been out of work for two-year periods (twice!), |
|
and I know how frustrating it can be.
All one can do is treat the job search like an unpaid, full-time job in and of itself, and keep plugging away at the process.

5. Just for clarification... |

You forgot to include the word "not" in "please do send your resume again". Right?

26. I thought that made better sense. But then again, some employers don't make sense. |

I just got a call last week from a former client OFFERING me a job! Interview is on Monday. :)
This is after about 9 months of hundreds of resumes and barely even being able to get an interview.

My neighbor has been out of work since October 2008. She kept applying for positions in local hospitals. Today she told me that one hospital nearby is checking her references. She hopes to hear she's been hired next week. Sticktoitveness definitely pays off.
Again, congrats on your new job. May you enjoy it in good health.

23. I've always found there to be a hard choice |
|
between jobs that pay well and jobs that you actually want to do.
It sounds like you've found a job worth doing. So did I, even though it gave me less pay than others I could have chosen.
There is a great satisfaction in making a difference, even if it doesn't pay the bills all that well. I wouldn't change anything I did for all the money in the world.

Damn, I wish I knew which way to play things. They rewarded you for doing what they explicitly told you NOT to do. I follow the rules and nothing happens.
