Bill Maher Blasts Tea Baggers For Ignoring Defense Spending (VIDEO)
Edited on Sat Apr-24-10 11:44 AM by RamboLiberal
Bill Maher laid into the tea party movement and the American people for what he described as their disconnect from the reality of the nation's finances.

"The problem with the tea party movement, besides their almost universal rejection of dentistry, is that they want money for nothing and chicks for free. They want a deregulated free market and their jobs to stay here in the US; they want guaranteed health coverage regardless of preexisting conditions without a big government mandate; they want to call themselves teabaggers and people to keep a straight face. And of course they want big tax cuts along with deficit reduction. I can't even think of a suitable analogy for that disconnect--it's like thinking getting a handjob will clean your garage."

Despite a $12.8 trillion national debt, America does not want to cut back on entitlement programs, defense spending, or even space travel, Maher observed during his "new rule" monologue on "Real Time."

He challenged the tea partiers to take on defense spending saying:

Everything that goes into defense costs us about a trillion dollars a year, most of which goes into fighting the Russians in 1978. Fighter planes for all those dog fights we get into with the Taliban, submarines to foil their evil plot to blow up our ships with car bombs, and space lasers to shoot down their exploding underpants...scream about handouts, this is what they should be protesting.

Great piece. Was that Richard Clarke I saw as well on the panel?

2. It's about time something was mentioned about this.
Wherever I bring it up, the tea-baggers say; "We half to defend ourselves against our enemies".

3. That was indeed Richard Clarke.
I enjoyed last night's episode even though that dork Matthew Continetti pissed me off. Susan Eisenhower seemed to have a hard time keeping her temper under wraps during the discussion of Continetti's Sarah Palin pity party book.

4. "Space lasers to shoot down their exploding underpants"

It will be a great day when schools have enough money to do education and when the Pentagon has to hold a bake sale to buy space lasers to shoot down exploding underpants and the CIA has to hold a car wash to raise the money to overthrown a democracy and install a dictator in its place.

5. Well, he's wrong about NASA
My first job out of high school was at NASA, in their library program for industry. The research they do into things like ceramics and electronics miniaturization has had profound effects in everything we use. It's an excuse for a massive pure research program.

However, a mission to Mars is pie in the sky thinking. There are a lot of problems to be solved before such a long voyage is undertaken, problems that will likely be solved through years of experience on the ISS.

He's dead right about Empire. Empire is a rich man's toy and the rich men in this country have declared themselves largely exempt from funding it, even as they've depressed the wages of the people they've shoved the burden onto.

He's right about the welfare Pentagon, too, but it's welfare to arms and military contractors.

Any plan for this economy has got to focus on getting the Pentagon off our backs and turning it into a defensive force instead of an imperial one; raising taxes on plutocrats will no longer be sufficient to do it alone.
