2. When ever people say to me |
|
that you can't see human made objects from space I like to show them photos like this.Every light you see is a human made object. They are called towns and cities.

Despite that size, it's remarkable how dark it is

17. Curious how the lower Nile is so clearly defined, very bright. |
|
Of course, something like 80% of Egypt's population lives within 10 miles of the river.

though not as distinctly as the Nile ...

4. I live on the East Coast. I was told when I went to a planetarium show |
|
at Mystic Seaport (in Connecticut) that seeing stars at night on the East Coast is one of the most difficult places in the world to see the stars because it has some of the highest light pollution. It is a bummer. Great proximity to NYC and Boston where I live but hard to see the stars at night.

7. It is a huge waste of energy |
|
Millions of tons of CO2 are going into the atmosphere just to send light up into the night sky.

10. I hate it that I can no longer see stars at night |
|
I live more or less in the center of the DFW blob of light and even on the darkest night can only see a handful of stars.

15. I never knew how many stars there are in the night sky |
|
until I moved out to where I am now.
Not a streetlight around for miles, and the nearest big cities are 20 miles in either direction.
On moonless nights it is totally black here. When there's a full moon, it casts an almost ethereal silver light over everything.
I think everyone should have the chance to experience this.

13. I took a trip to Zambia in 2001 to see an eclipse |
|
As you see from this map, with Zambia being in central Africa, there's a good reason that the night sky was a beautiful thing to see while there, an unexpected bonus on top of seeing my first total solar eclipse.

16. Does anyone else notice that weird red glow |
|
near Wasilla? Wonder what's causing it?
I live at the very top of the India, just below that dark area where the Himalayas begin, and then the Tibetan plateau. Gorgeous star gazing here.
