Japanese protest US plan for new base

Several dozens of Japanese demonstrators have marched through the streets of Tokyo to protest the presence of the US military in their country.

The protesters demanded the removal of a controversial US airbase on the southern island of Okinawa.

The rally took place ahead of a major demonstration on the island scheduled to be held on Sunday.

The Sunday demonstration is expected to attract up to 100,000 protesters near Kadena Air Base, which is the largest US military facility in the Asia Pacific region.

Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama on Saturday reiterated his previous stance toward US plans to build a new airbase in Okinawa's coastal area of Henoko, expressing strong objection.

1. They don't want the US military there. It will cost a fortune to build

a new base.

There are numerous bases in the US that were closed or downsized.

Bring the personnel and dependents home, spread them around the US. Boosts local economies.

Reduce the total number of active duty by means of normal attrition as enlistments expire. Reduce recruitment efforts.

Do this with all the 700+ military sites in the more than 30 other countries.

Stop being the policemen to the world.

Seriously- I don't get it. And the expense -THAT'S the kind of wasted tax dollars I have a problem with.
