The Rude Pundit: Photos That Make the Rude Pundit Want to Force-Feed Crude-Coated Shrimp to BP Execs

That's a picture of the sweet crude oil leaking out under the ocean where a floating drilling rig used to be. There's a 1000 barrels a day gushing out. As for stopping it, the New Orleans Times-Picayune says, "Officials said they were trying to stop the flow by using robot submarines to activate valves at the well head, but that would take 24 to 36 hours to complete. If that doesn't work, crews are also planning to drill a relief well to cut off the flow -- which could take several months."

The Rude Pundit's no mathematician, but a month of oil being pissed out at the rate of 42,000 gallons a day equals a fuck of a lot of oil. Hope everyone at Jazz Fest this week is enjoying those shrimp po-boys. Savor 'em, man, 'cause who knows what the fresh taste of sweet crude will be like over the next few years.

The workers who died in the Deepwater Horizon rig blast are not being memorialized and mythologized in the same way that the miners in West Virginia have been. Most of the people the Rude Pundit knows who work the rigs, who do seven on and seven off, who helicopter out to work, do it for the money because everything else was just gonna take too fucking long after high school. It's harsh, awful, dangerous work, and the workers don't get to go home after their daily shift. Like the Big Branch miners, they are doing it at the bidding of a large, uncaring corporation and because this nation is too proudly backwards to wean itself from the crude teat.

So disaster all around. Environmental, economic, emotional. As the President said in West Virginia yesterday, "How can we fail them? How can a nation that relies on its miners not do everything in its power to protect them? How can we let anyone in this country put their lives at risk by simply showing up to work?" It's naive, though. We demand they they put their lives at risk so we don't have to change anything about our own.

Indeed. And when the change comes - inevitably, suddenly, wrenchingly - the same people who made so much money off of delaying that change are the ones yammering loudest to blame the workers who made them all that filthy, filthy money. Do you really give a rat's ass what a miner or a rig worker makes? No you don't. Until the day the coal runs out, the well runs dry or the whole thing collapses and kills a bunch of those workers. Then, suddenly, you're all about how much money those guys made, what kind of pension benefits they might have had, and how much it cost the company to buy insurance for their inevitable injuries or death. And why do you suddenly care about that? Because the teevee told you to care. And they told you to care because the owners told the teevee people about it. And the owners are pissed because their stream of do-nothing income just got interrupted.

5. drill Obama drill, drill Obama drill, drill Obama drill!!!!!!!!!!
Edited on Mon Apr-26-10 12:32 PM by flyarm
and this is the possible future of Florida folks..( Obama has now opened up 2/3rds of the entire state of Florida sandwiched on both sides of the State) .and the whole east coast from 2/3rd down Fla coast up to NJ!!!!!!!!!

And right now Louisiana is fucked, as are all the gulf states!

Understand ..this is an ecological nightmare..

The Gulf of Mexico has very little waves..to break up the oil ........it will settle on the floor of the gulf for hundreds, if not thousands of years..

Our fish will be contaminated..sea life will be compromised..our entire eco system will be fucked.

But Obama and his spokespeople have now stated ..this accident (? HA!) will have no baring on his decision to allow drilling off our coasts..

Understand this..Katrina came through the Gulf of Mexico as a CAT 5 Hurricane..by the time it hit the northern gulf states it had downgraded to Cat 3..

Anything in the open waters of the gulf will sustain major, major damage in a Cat 5 hurricane.

This accident ( which dems throughout Fla have warned about, and fought off these fucking drilling rigs for decades) is just a precurser for what is to come with Obama allowing millions of miles of our coast lines to be subjected to!

I never in my lifetime would have believed a Democratic president could or would ..fuck our eco system so blatantly! With no conscience whatsoever!

Change..you fucking bet..change no republican would have ever gotten..because democrats worked so hard to stop this shit!

Change alright..a total fucking sell out of our eco-system!

Thank you Mr Obama for allowing the fucking my state of pristine beaches and our economic survival!!!!!!!!!!
