I helped an illegal alien when I lived in Sierra Vista, Arizona |
|
I was doing volunteer work for a battered women's shelter. One of the clients I was helping to drive to appointments happened to be an illegal alien - a battered woman who escaped from Mexico with her child. And, yes, I drove her to her medical appointments and job appointments and didn't turn her in.
I can understand being against illegal immigration in theory, but when you see the individual faces, it's a lot harder. I am still glad to this day that I helped her and didn't turn her in to authorities.

1. I helped lots of them in my ESL classes |
|
It was pretty common, actually. We always knew pretty much who was legal or illegal, and the center that I worked for (Centro Civico) had an active program for helping illegal immigrants become legal. That didnt stop us from doing our jobs, or in this case, my job - which was teaching English. The vast majority of them were great students and quick learners.

4. Most government agencies do not require proof of citizenship for clients to get services. |
|
When a social security number is asked for, many times a false one is given. The same one is used so often that it is not considered the most useful means of identification any longer.
Since the services are paid for by federal dollars passed on to the States and sales tax collected by the states, and since most illegals who work do so for employers who withhold income tax from their pay checks, and who pay sales tax, they are paying for the services just as legals are.

5. Reporting you to the authorities.... |
|
Be prepared for a late-night knock upon the door.
I mean, after all, isn't that the next logical step? Going door to door to ensure that no one is harboring the criminals? Forcible entry in the dead of night. Searching your house at gunpoint to ensure that there are no undesirables there.
This whole law is beyond ridiculous. And I think that those people who are pushing it should be way more than ashamed of themselves. And so should the people who sat idly by in the elections that allowed these people access to office.

6. I've helped several over the years. |

Brutalizing the victims of not only their system but ours as well isn't how I want to live my life.

12. This thread has done my heart some good. I was wondering how you all felt about |
|
all of this. I knew everyone was against the new law, but didn't know how you all felt about helping illegal aliens. Glad to know there are so many kindred spirits here! :) Boy I really really love DU.

I know my Welsh and irish ancestors were shipjumpers and stowaways. And on the Choctaw side, we walked to Mississippi from Texas, plunked our asses down and said "we live here now. The rest of you guys, tough nuts, nyeah!"

I be careful when posting or talking about this. The opposition are watching, lurking, and stalking for an opportunity.
