Okla. House overrides abortion restrictions vetoes - Washington Post
Another state to add to the Boycott list.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/04/26/AR2010042603655.html

The Oklahoma House voted overwhelmingly Monday to override vetoes of two restrictive abortion measures Gov. Brad Henry has called unconstitutional intrusions into citizens' private lives and decisions.

The Senate was expected to follow suit Tuesday, after which the bills would become law.

One of the measures requires women to undergo an ultrasound and listen to a detailed description of the fetus before getting an abortion. The other prohibits pregnant women from seeking damages if physicians withhold information or provide inaccurate information about their pregnancy.

Supporters said the second measure was aimed at preventing women from discriminating against fetuses with disabilities. The votes were 81-14 and 84-12.

9. k&r, is this aimed at SCOTUS? Overly restrictive and morally assinine.
So a woman can get tested for fetal abnormalities, and it is ok for the doctor to lie about the results? That is practicing medicine without a license (congress idiots who ok this) and morally wrong.

"unconstitutional intrusions into citizens' private lives and decisions" indeed.

"This month alone, Henry has signed laws requiring clinics to post signs stating a woman cannot be forced to have an abortion, saying an abortion will not be performed until the woman gives her voluntary consent" WTF? This is stupid since women already must give consent. What do they think, women are being physically forced into getting abortions without consenting? Stupid asses.

13. It's what you can expect from people who hate women.
The only reason for that sign is if they believe that women are so stupid that they don't realize that abortions are voluntary.

I realize hope this anti-woman bill is repealed.

21. Ah yes, women must "be responsible" for their decisions,
Edited on Tue Apr-27-10 04:43 AM by NYC Liberal
so they are forced to wait even longer, possibly threatening their jobs and livelihoods when they have to take even more time off work.

But no, the doctors should not be responsible for bad or plain false information.

"aimed at preventing women from discriminating against fetuses with disabilities"

It doesn't matter whether the fetus has "disabilities" or not. The fetus does not have a choice here, nor should it. (As if a fetus could make a choice anyway.) If they want to call a fetus a PERSON, then if the mother does not want the fetus inside of her body wouldn't the PERSON be trespassing? Why not, as long as we're making logical leaps here.

23. So basically, that second law is meant to protect anti-choice doctors
who DELIBERATELY lie to their patients in order to prevent them from choosing an abortion.

For example, let's say that a physician sees a major fetal abnormality on the ultrasound, like severe hydrocephalus, that is incompatible with life. Under the new law, the doctor could lie to the woman and tell her that everything is "normal" on her ultrasound (for the sake of keeping her from choosing to abort) and the woman would have no legal or civil recourse WHATSOEVER to sue him for his lies afterward, no matter what the consequences might be.

In Oklahoma, doctors are now legally permitted to withhold vital information that could have a direct negative effect on a woman's financial health, mental health, and in fact, could cost her her very LIFE, in order to force her to avoid terminating the pregnancy. How many women would choose to risk their lives in childbirth in order to bear a baby that has no brain? Some would, but lots WOULDN'T. That choice has now effectively been made FOR them in Oklahoma.

Under that second law, it's conceivable that a doctor could blatantly lie to an uninformed woman and tell her that her 12-week fetus would feel excruciating pain if she had an abortion, and the woman would have no legal recourse. Doctors could spread every ludicrous right-wing LIE about abortion that exists (for example, telling an 18-year-old girl that if she aborts her first pregnancy, she'll never be able to have another healthy baby) and women can do NOTHING about it!

Of course the SCOTUS will overturn it. But not until some woman has been injured by the law, and therefore has "standing"--and in the interim court battle, how many OTHER women will be injured by this law? How many lives will be ruined? How many injuries and deaths will occur because doctors are now legally permitted to lie to their patients about their health condition?

I am so SICK of this country. Sick of this bullshit, sick of the idiotic Freeper tyrants who don't even try to be SUBTLE about their fascism anymore. Most of all, I'm sick of the lazy, complacent, ignorant, reactionary twits who care more about "winning" than about what happens afterward. Somebody tell me when we've all had enough of this shit and we're ready to hit the streets--not just in Oklahoma, but everywhere.

First things first--can we get together a database of OB/GYNs in Oklahoma who will sign an agreement stating that they will NOT lie (or lie by omission) to their patients about their pregnancies and/or fetuses? If we can get a list together, we can start distributing it throughout the state to help minimize the immediate damage. I wish I had the financial resources...I want nothing more than to temporarily move to Oklahoma and get started working on the ground there to make this happen. DAMMIT. I am in tears thinking about the way that women have basically just be enslaved to the whims of their doctors there.

24. Does the AMA have anything to say about any of this?
Edited on Tue Apr-27-10 06:22 AM by Proud Liberal Dem
Especially about the "It's ok to LIE" part? I would think that there might at least be an ethical problem with allowing such a practice?"
:wtf:
:banghead:

It's days like this that make me fear for the future. It seems Oklahoma, like other states such as Indiana, is in a race to the bottom in terms of which state can enact the most regressive and anti-choice legislation.

29. I did my Dissertation on Southern Politics and there is something terribly wrong
in the US right now that can't even be discussed on DU without getting censored.

I did a statistical correlation using the variables of religion, race, wealth, poverty, education and by county and by relationship to national norms.

There is something terribly wrong going on, the civil war is not over, neither are civil rights war let alone
the economic burden the south does on the rest of the nation..... the stats still suck down there and you know it.

Hell, I grew up in the south had a kid born there, studied there, lived there, worked there, organized labor there, so don't give me this slamming the south shit as a boston bouncer.

Corporations existing there ...... do I need to mention XE and the others..... I think not.
