Uh, why does CASTELLANOS have a twang in his dialect? Nothing Hispanic in it. I'm doing some Googling.

1. Here we go, for starters...
**********QUOTE********

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Castellanos

Castellanos, a native of Havana, Cuba, is fluent in Spanish and English. His parents, refugees who fled Castro’s Cuba in 1961, came to the U.S. with one suitcase, two children and eleven dollars. He spent the remainder of his childhood growing up with his parents Jose and Olga and his younger sister Laura Castellanos in the small town of Coats, NC. A former Morehead and National Merit Scholar at the University of North Carolina, Castellanos speaks frequently about politics and is a guest commentator on CNN. He has also been a guest on Meet the Press, Hardball, Crossfire as well as at numerous Universities including the United States Army Communication School. Castellanos is currently working with the Harvard Fellowship Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Castellanos served as a key creative member to the Bush-Cheney 2004 election, producing many spots, such as the “Wolves” commercial that acquired much media attention. He has helped elect 9 U.S. Senators, 6 Governors, and enjoys over two decades of political consulting experience, both in the United States and abroad.

Castellanos has served as media consultant to seven U.S. Presidential campaigns, and is currently serving as a volunteer on the John McCain for President Ad Council. He has been credited with the discovery of the political "soccer mom" and called "father of the attack ad.”

Fortune magazine singled out Mr. Castellanos as a “new style media master” and GQ magazine ranked him as one of the "Top 50 most powerful people in Washington." ....

During the heated 2000 U.S. presidential campaign season, Castellanos produced an ad for the Republican National Committee attempting to discredit the prescription drug plan policy offered by U.S. Democratic Party presidential nominee and then-Vice President Al Gore.<4> Alongside images of Gore, the ad showed the word "RATS" for a split second, before the complete word "bureaucrats" appeared on-screen.<4> During the ensuing uproar, Castellanos claimed that the inclusion was "purely accidental."<4> Psychologists suggest that such brief messages can be processed by the brain but at an unconscious or subliminal level.<4> ....

4. The problem with this show...
Edited on Mon Apr-26-10 08:48 PM by PavePusher
is that Ms. Behar was either grossly misinformed, or flat lied about how the new law works. And the accusations of racism and insinuations about Nazis were pretty disgusting.

Another "entertainer" trying to win five more minutes of fame at the expense of honesty.

Sad.

Edit: And apparently the other two were ignorant or worse as well.

Every liberal I've heard in the news has mis-interpreted how this law will be applied.

P.S. And the Repub did too.

Sorry for the late reply, working various projects prior to starting a road trip Tuesday.

Being against illegal immigration is not inherently racist.

13. This law will do as much to stop illegal immigration as
swatting individual misquitos would have helped find a cure for malaria. Money will be spent to round up, detain, and deport a miniscule amount of the people it is supposedly aiming for. That is going to be a huge amount of money wasted.

It is an open invitation for abuse and it IS racist. It is a thinly disguised law aimed at people who look different. It was passed to mollify the extremists, and to make others believe that a magic bullet to stop the problem has been found. That is twaddle.

14. 1. Please explain how this is "racist".
2. Please propose your solution(s) to the illegal immigration problem/issue.

Please note that if you were to enter any other nation illegaly (a crime everywhere I can think of), and be caught afterwards, possibly in the commission of a second crime, you would certainly have your immigration staus investigated, and be detained and deported at best. Jail time would probably be in play as well.

I believe that we need a massive overhaul of our immigration system to make it easier for people to come here legally and be productive, contributing members of our society, and to seek Citizenship if they want to. But no-one should get a free pass after flouting the law. Every legal immigrant I've ever met/worked with feels that would be a kick in the teeth for them after all the effort they've put into coming here.

It's flat out designed to target Latinos.

18. I'm at a loss here....
Most of the illegals coming through the Mexican border would be... ummm... Latino/Hispanic. Right?

How is it racist to acknowledge reality?

Now, there are probably other ethnic groups using that route as well, but I would guess them to be a very small sub-set of the total. I doubt many Russians or Somalis come in via Mexico. I could be wrong, of course.

Where in the law does it say it can only be applied to Latinos/Hispanics? If a police officer stops a caucasian person in Tucson for erratic driving, or broken/non-functioning tail-lights, that person seems oddly behaved, does not possess a valid drivers licence and speaks with a strong European accent, I am fairly sure they'd get checked out too.

Or do you really think this is only about "brown people"? If so, I suspect the racism is not coming from where you think it is. If states on the Canadian border pass similar laws, are you going to claim "racism" for that as well?

You have a far higher regard of people than I do. I might even call it naive.

FTR, yes, I personally "really think this is only about "brown people"".

"If states on the Canadian border pass similar laws, are you going to claim "racism" for that as well?" We'll have to wait and see if and when that ever happens. Funny though - doesn't seem too many people are interested in keepin' them dern Canadians out.

illegaly by the thousands every day.

Maybe they are and it just hasn't hit the news yet?

Anyway, if they did, I'd recommend we chuck back their illegal entrants as well. No racism here.

31. Your posting has demonstrated either thinly veiled racism
or an astounding amount of naivete.

You honestly do not think that the racist rural sheriffs in Arizona (led by their patron saint Joe Arpaio) will use this law as an excuse to brutalize Hispanics because they committed the cardinal sin of having brown skin? If not you haven't been paying any attention.

26. 80-90% of Latinos are NATIVE BORN
So it's blatantly a violation of the 14th amendment to go after natural born citizens in order to find a small percentage of undocumented aliens.

That's baltant racism.

And you are displaying blatant racist behavior defending it.

flout the law. Those that commit crimes especially need to be addressed. However as I said, the return for the money put into detention and deportation will be miniscule compared to the problem that you are facing.

I don't have a pat answer. There is no pat answer. The first thing would be to send enough help to guard the border much more in light of the chaos in Mexico.

You also need the Hispanic community to work with to solve this problem. Now that this law has been passed, they will be loathe to point out anybody, even criminals. Stopping people because they look Hispanic is a guaranteed way to really seperate the communities at a time when people need to work together. And don't tell me the law doesn't say that. The end result will be a lot of people stopped because of the way they look.

The federal government needs to take up immigration reform NOW.

The ugliness unleashed about Hispanics hits all of them and not just people who are illegal. Laws like this begin to make the extremists feel that their actions are validated no matter how outrageous. That is a clear and present danger to us all.

16. This isn't about being against illegal immigration.
This is about Arizona cops being able to detain people who are dark-skinned for as long as they want for no reason.

This is about anyone who is not lily-liver white having to carry "documentation" on them for fear of getting tossed in the pokey.

This bill doesn't cure illegal immigration--it just gives scumbags like Joe Arpaio more leeway to brutalize Hispanics.
