The general consensus is that immigration debate is bad for Dems in November

I think the general consensus on that is wrong.

I think the "Papers, Please" law in Arizona is just the kind of thing that can get Democratic-leaning voters to the polls in droves like they came in 2008.

It is a very big opportunity to close the "enthusiasm gap".

The old "broken glass" analogy. Which side can get its voters to theoretically walk over broken glass to get to the polls? In effect, so passionate that nothing will keep them away?

I think the Latino vote will fall into the "broken glass" category this fall. And the Civil Libertarians too.

1. Good if it brings lots of folks out to the polls
Bad if people of color are challenged standing line at the polls for not being citizens.

5. Democrats need to capture and hold the Latino vote
as well as maintaining a lock on the African American vote. Come the middle of this century when whites become a minority in this country those demographics spell doom for the Republican party.

7. Latinos fled the GOP after 2004
Edited on Mon Apr-26-10 10:19 PM by Juche
Bush made inroads by treating latinos halfway decent. Rove said he had to to have a future coalition in the GOP. I think latinos only preferred Kerry 55-44 over Bush (they were normally 60% for dem candidates).

But then the GOP went apeshit and anti-latino, and anti-immigrant after that. Now latinos went about 65-35 Obama. If Latinos had had those kinds of margins for Kerry in 2004 rather than the 55% margin, I think Kerry would've won Nevada, New Mexico & Colorado, giving him the presidency even w/o Ohio.
