Poll question: Who on this site carries your Birth Certificates with them everywhere you go?
Edited on Mon Apr-26-10 10:01 PM by AnArmyVeteran
The only ID I carry with me is my driver's license. I wouldn't think of having my birth certificate with me. It's an original and I would hate to lose it. Most people don't carry their birth certificate with them. Same goes for their passports and social security cards. Why take chances of losing them and going through the expense and hassle of replacing them? But it looks like every tanned person in Arizona is going to have to start carting along all of their 'papers' any time they go out.

1. What a painfully absurd thought.
Almost as painfully absurd as the reality in Arizona.

4. Thanks. It keeps the past in stark memory for me.
So that we, pray the gods, do not repeat it.

3. The last time I had mine on me is when I went to Canada in 2001.
I don't even carry my SS card on me in case I might lose it.

6. $100 donation to DU
if you can show me in the bill/law where it requires a BC for ID...

(btw it simply says the police will use 8 USC Section 1373, an existing Fed program of verifying ID using DL or state ID cards, names, ss, etc...)

but hyperbole is good...

11. Here is your own hyperbole
First, the OP didn't say the law required it, so your entire premise is...

Next, sure the law doesn't say you are required to show legal residency, however it does say if the state has "probable cause" that you're in the country illegally (and "probable cause" is NOT defined anywhere in the statute), the state can make an attempt to determine your residency status.

So what exactly would you do if you were an American citizen living in Arizona that just happened to be Hispanic and speak English with a Spanish accent? Would you carry some form of residency proof, or would you take the chance on getting jacked up for hours while the state tries to figure out who you are and where you're from? Any reasonably intelligent person can connect the dots here.

27. Heinrich Himmler would be proud of you
Perhaps you don't see the moral hazard of allowing large segments of the population of Arizona to be harassed, but that doesn't mean everyone is so blind to the implications here. One of the greatest freedoms we have as Americans (and perhaps one of the few remaining) is we don't have to worry about being stopped by the Gestapo because we look a certain way and detained simply because we don't have our "papers". I'm not willing to slide down that slippery slope just because I may not be so personally affected. YMMV.

28. Sometimes, Godwin's Law is warranted.
This is one of those times.

I can't believe we're arguing about what kind of ID is acceptable, rather than the legality of the request therefore. :banghead:

14. Ok while the bill may not use the words consider the actions so far
Trucker asked for ID and he presents his commerical license and other papers, but he is arrested and not until he presents his birth certificate is he released. Also Arpaio has used this ID in his sweeps as the latino community here can tell you. That should tell you enough right there.

7. FWIW - the AZDailySun says you'd be ok with your driver's license if it meets its criteria

http://www.azdailysun.com/news/local/state-and-regional/c5640fb6-7b1f-5286-be2b-0e38d72b1c9e.html

These are the documents that would allow a police officer to presume someone is in this country legally:

-- a valid Arizona driver license

-- a valid nonoperating identification card

-- a valid tribal enrollment card or other form of tribal identification

-- any other federal, state or local government issued identification -- but only if obtaining it requires the holder to first prove legal presence in the United States

Don't carry the passport when walking in the neighborhood, at the gym, or on the golf course. I keep my "original" BC locked up, probably wouldn't show it even if I were running for President. You got a problem with that?

On the other hand, I strongly object to being required to carry an ID with me, particularly those with RFID which allow monitoring via proximity at greater distances than most people realize. One of my fears is that bombs could be setup with them triggered by having one or more US passports near by.

not sure if i have a birth cert i'm pretty old but if you carry a driver's license you carry everything you need for an identify thief to truly screw up yr life and get you thrown in prison for serious crimes so i'm not sure what you're bitching about

i've known many people get in trouble because of an ID thief's actions and it was ALWAYS because of a driver's license, not a birth cert

if you don't know what you're talking abt, maybe stop talking a minute

there are several states where you must always carry ID with you, NEVADA and "las vegas" where supposedly "what happens in vegas stays in vegas" has had the same law for my entire lifetime and i'm freaking old and you're not complaining about that

there is nothing wrong w. asking people to prove that they're who they claim to be and the world won't end if people have to prove they're who they claim they are

if you carry a driver's license you have nothing to bitch about, you HAVE been assimilated, the guy who steals your driver's license, then wrecks your car and gets arrested in your name -- you ARE going to prison for what he did, whereas a birth cert i've never heard of it happening with THAT piece of paper

you're chasing after the shiny distraction and it's just silly

Some are even demanding three so I've got a DL, my birth certificate and my passport.

Edited on Tue Apr-27-10 05:00 AM by slackmaster
Is anyone being required to do that now?

I carry a California Driver License, which is sufficient to establish my lawful presence in the state. I carry a passport or a certified copy of my birth certificate only in the rare instances where proof of eligibility to work in the USA is required. Normally those are kept locked up at home in my safe.

23. I don't ..
A lot of the time I don't carry ID at all. It is something we used to be able to take for granted. Go to the store with just the cash to pay for our purchases, or go for a walk. I have MS and I haven't had a drivers license since the state took it away in 1980 because my vision was so bad I would have wound up harming or killing somebody. I have a state ID card, but I don't carry it very often. It is hard enough to get around without carrying a purse full of stuff.

If this law is the shape of things to come, count me out. I doubt that it is the kind of thing that we have been fighting for since our birth as a nation.
