What signing the Immigration Bill did for the AZ Governors Popularity

This is actually good news for us, because Terry would do better against Brewer than he would against Dean Martin. And the other GOP primary leader just got caught in a financial scandal.

What Signing Immigration Bill Did For Arizona Governor's Popularity
By CQ-Roll Call Staff | April 26, 2010 5:36 PM | Permalink | Comments (5)

Arizona got a lot of Americans talking about illegal immigration when it passed a law requiring police to act on any suspicions they may have. But how about inside the state? What did that law do for the governor who signed it?

Public Policy Polling says it's been in the field asking Arizonans about Gov. Jan Brewer.

Full results are coming out tomorrow. In the meantime, PPP put out just this much as a preview of coming attractions:

•Brewer's now more popular with Republicans -- 54 percent approve of her job performance, up from 28 perccent in September.

•By an enormous margin -- 71 percent to 25 percent -- Hispanics prefer Democratic candidate Terry Goddard.

"That may seem ho hum," writes PPP's Tom Jenson, "But consider this: Barack Obama only won Hispanic voters in the state by a 56-41 margin. So Goddard's outperforming him by more than 30 points there."

1. It's really funny to watch that party continue to pander to their Archie Bunker base,
even though it's soon going to be dwarfed by the very constituencies they must attack in order to please Archie.

2. Good. Changing the voters' preferences is ultimately the only fix to this....

Now if only signing such laws would significantly change *white* voters' preferences.

I guess that's just crazytalk.

3. I did a rec on this but guess our children are hard at work
Edited on Mon Apr-26-10 10:21 PM by SargeUNN
This is good news for the nation and Arizona and honestly I can't see why anyone here, other than freepers would unrec this. Shame on you who do. Maybe it is time to once more deactive the rec and unrec buttons since some are too immature to know how to use it properly.

4. Obama "only" got 56% of the AZ Hispanic vote in 2008 b/c the enemy had a favorite son on the ticket
That won't be the case this time.

6. Sorry about always being Mr.pessimist here, but 1 out of every 4 Hispanics STILL supports Brewer ???
That to me is far more mind-boggling than the 71 % who don't.

8. Yes. Many Hispanics are legal immigrants or 2nd or 3rd generation
citizens and resent illegal newcomers, just as the old-line German Jews resented the Eastern European peasant Jews who followed. The outside world lumps them together and the strivers find that difficult to live with.

9. Living in New Mexico , I know that well, but this law discriminates against them too
That's the part I don't understand; they're fair game for legalized harassment too now. This law has lumped them together and you'd think that virtually all who are now at the mercy of this would be equally pissed off. Many New Mexico Hispanics ( I assume it's at least somewhat similar in Arizona) are more than 2nd or 3rd generation too; with families that have been here for hundreds of years. And now all of a sudden, in Arizona, they're going to be subject to having to "prove" they're Americans just because of what they look like. (or their shoes)

10. Dont forget the sombrero
but this is a common pattern in American Immigration, so it is not hard to understand. Happens every time actually.

11. We don't always act in our own best interests. Sometimes we act in what we think
(hope) is our best interests. Witness the # of people who rail against the estate tax.
