My wife...
Is a Dutch born woman of asian decent.

She speaks English with a very discernible accent and of course, speaks fluent Dutch as well.

She's been mistaken for both a Latina and a Filipina by Americans during her lifetime, when she is neither.

She has a Social Security card, a valid state issued drivers license, a DoD issued ID card and an American passport.

...And she's also naturalized American citizen who has lived in this country since she was a child.

Looking at her, you wouldn't think that she is also an honorably discharged US Army veteran, but she is.

Despite any of this, I am absolutely convinced that, had we settled in Maricopa County, she would be constantly under the threat of undue scrutiny by law enforcement authorities, "concerned" citizens and La Migra, up to and above the point of constant harassment.

The well has been poisoned in Arizona and the people behind that horrible law won't stop just there. People like this love to spread their poison.

On one hand, I'm glad that we've never had to deal with anti-immigrant harassment because of the fact that we've lived on the East Coast and the Midwest when in America.

But on the other, I can't help but think, how long will this be the case?

Things like this need to be nipped in the bud before they're allowed to spread.

We are all at risk.

Maricopa County is for notorious for the high number of suits against Sheriff Joe's brigade for harassment. It's a virtual hotbed of racial profiling.

It would seem to be that for every person who bothered to sue, that there are quite a few that don't. So, I would assume that the problem is much greater than statistics would lead one to believe.

Now, we've lived in Northern Virginia for quite a few years, which also has a substantial population of foreign born residents, many of whom are from Central America.

However, despite the cosmopolitan makeup of NoVa's demographics, racial profiling was not something that my wife and I either witnessed or experienced while living there.

The difference? Attitude.

It's that kind of insidious attitude which drove the passage of the anti-immigrant law, which we have to defend against.

And as I said before, the people who promote this law won't stop in Arizona... They're going to do their best to spread that attitude to every corner of this country, which to them by all accounts, seems to be populated by "suspicious furriners".

For example, the last one states: :"there is no use stressing abt stuff that ain't never gonna happen"; it obviously omitted "to well-off white people".

she's Japanese, so not the primary target right now, but still - she's not a US citizen, she doesn't "look" like these idiots' idea of "American" and she speaks with some accent.

She is in the country legally (though she married my brother almost a year earlier than planned apparently due to immigration issues), but I wonder if this will escalate to where she doesn't feel safe here.

45. Apparently, Michelle Malkin is the American born child of
immigrant parents who were here on non-immigrant visas when she was born.

http://latinola.com/story.php?story=8291

Malkin favors a position that at least one of the parents must be a US Citizen in order for a person born here to receive citizenship.

She regards children born to undocumented workers and legal permanent residents as "anchor babies."

The concept of anchor baby is that the baby who is born here would be eligible in the future to immigrate his parents and his brothers and sisters, thus the term anchor. (Through the petition process INS form I-130)

But there is a fatal flaw to her argument. Michelle Malkin's parents were both from the Philippines were both here on NON-IMMIGRANT visas when she was born. Therefore that makes Michelle Malkin and anchor baby.

Michelle, as an anchor baby herself, would deny the same benefits that she enjoyed. Malkin also sides with Judge Arpaio.

31. I don't believe you. I want to see PROOF your wife is a vet and a citizen! Papers please!
It doesn't matter to the rabid right if everyone's rights get trampled on and everyone is presumed guilty, until proven innocent. Conservatives always moan and whine about the big, bad government intruding into their lives, but they are always the biggest advocates of draconian measures to use government to invade peoples' lives, bodies and minds. They want everyone to be forced to pray. They want to tell women what they can or cannot do with their bodies. They want to restrict what people do in their bedrooms. They liked it when Bush's government illegally wiretapped citizens. They loved it when Bush oversaw a record number of government executions of inmates. They loved it when Bush used our government military to go to war against a non-existent enemy. Now they want to turn our country into a police state.

Where in the fuck are the democratic leaders????? Why are they so damned gutless? It is unbelievable how the democratic leadership has allowed the right wing to control the message even when its record is so deplorable and anti-freedom and anti-human. If I was the head of the DNC I would easily show the American people why voting conservative is a vote against themselves. Where the FUCK is the democratic leadership?

BTW: Of course I believe your story about your amazing wife and I value her service to her country. And she is bilingual, so she speaks two more languages than a typical tea bagger ;).

39. The irony of it all is...
... that when the US invaded and/or annexed all the South Western states, we did so among other reasons... the fact that the white settlers were being marginalized and abused by the Mexican authorities, among other things for their insistence on making them learn Spanish.

Seriously, I think most Americans do not realized the awesomeness of our hypocrisy through history. I can't think of another culture through history with a similar display of doublethink.

42. Though I have never been to Arizona and have ...
... no burning desire to go there I am appalled that a law like this could even be conceived. I'm Pillsbury dough-boy white (reddish brown hair, green eyes and freckles)and of Western European ancestry ... realistically no one will ever stop me and ask for "my papers." I am sickened and appalled by this as a human being.

I will admit my feelings are not solely borne out of desire for justice and equality .... my beautiful children share my ancestry and that of their Indian (the subcontinent)father. They are brown ... their features are not necessarily attributable to a specific ethnicity (they are often mistaken as Hispanic, Middle Eastern, Spanish, Italian, Greek ...). they were born here, they are american citizens and they run the risk of being harassed ... it pisses me off that once again racism would be codified in this country.

My daughter traveled to Mexico last year with her boyfriend. (They were two hippie looking kids) Every Mexican person my daughter and her friend met, invited these hippie kids into their home. One couple with young kids even escorted my daughter and her friend to a beach-because my daughter had difficulty finding it. This is how we return their hospitality. To protest--maybe we should all wear yellow armbands proclaiming we are all latina/latino.
