David Letterman: Jay Leno didn't get a bum rap, got 'everything he deserved'
By Vicki Hyman/The Star-Ledger
April 27, 2010, 10:02AM

The Star-LedgerNBC moved Jay Leno back to 11:35 p.m., booting Conan O'Brien's from his dream gig, "The Tonight Show.""Believe me, he got everything he deserved."

-- David Letterman, refuting guest Dr. Phil's claim that Jay Leno got a "bum rap" in the wake of "The Tonight Show" debacle.

When Phil McGraw asked Letterman about the recent late night wars, Letterman went on a tirade against Leno, whom he called "a boob" (this is broadcast television, after all). He mocked Leno for complaining that he, as well as Conan O'Brien, got "screwed" by NBC. "I said, 'Wait a minute Jay, you both got screwed, yet you're the only one who ended up with a show."

He is not trusted in the entertainment community and David is making it clear that Leno is NOT who he appears to be.Good for Dave.I am on Team COCO.

5. He got Carson's friendship & guidance..worth way more to him than the show
Had he continued with Johnny's show, he would have naturally made changes to it, to reflect his own style, but when NBC screwed him, the Johnny Carson Show remained an iconic memory, spoiled by Leno & crew.

leno got the "show", but Dave got Johnny..and the Johnny WAS the Tonight Show.

Dave was able to create his own show, with no chance of being accused of "changing Johnny's show". He was compared to Carson in a mentorship/friendship way, instead of as a usurper who took over and changed it all.

leno was the backstabbing schemer... a standup comedian who was not all that funny.. He may have wanted to shine brighter than Johnny Carson, but he ended up a lame version of Mike Douglas/Merv Griffin..

Dave "became" Johnny.. He's the one with protégés whose careers HE now mentors.. people like Ray Romano, Craig Ferguson, and even Jon Stewart.

Leno only mentors his warehouse full of cars..

7. A tirade?
That is not what I saw. Letterman has made no bones about enjoying Leno's situation and he just expained why he ws enjoying it so much. The other side of Leno.
It was fun tv.

8. Old squint face is at it again
trying to make his ratings go up. At least Leno didn't require his staff to be his sex partners. Cause Letterman would HAVE to force them, no body would want him as a partner unless forced.
