Fascism has a built-in war machine used for defense as well as offense, and the only way to remove the machine is to destroy it.
Now, that doesn't always happen with military conflict.
Rome is a great example. Rome imploded on itself and died a slow death of attrition. But that's rare.

When the KKK, American Nazi Party, and the rest of 'em saw how great that worked out for everyone, they abandoned Fascism.
Perhaps we'll elect an actual unabashed Liberal Democrat to the Presidency one day soon, and history will repeat.
