"Mrs. Republican" where I live in the apartment building, just came |
|
down to the porch to sit for a while. We had all just picked up our mail. I was going on a bit about a haircut I just got (too short) and she sat down with us with a huff. I know not to get into it with her about anything political so waited while someone else asked her what was wrong... Lo and behold...She is "sick and tired of those damned republicans supporting Wall Street and the banks. If they're counting on winning anything this mid-term election they just lost it with their obstructionism this second day in a row." She had watched Senator Bunning on the MSNBC Ratigan show and he sent her "over the edge" as she put it.
Of course, all heads turned toward me as they know I spend waaaaay too much time on DU and other lefty sites, waiting for my response, if any. I don't feel bad for her but she was, at the very least, honest. I had to come upstairs anyway so as I got up I patted her on the hand and said "admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery." She actually laughed out loud and proceeded to tell us her very republican son was shocked, shocked I tell ya, that he received a far larger return on his income tax this year. He's wavering also according to her...LOL.
One by one, very slowly, they will come..

72. The Joke is so old, the first record I have of it was the 1860 election. |
|
In that election it was Stephen Douglas vs Lincoln in the North, but Douglas vs Breckenridge in the South. Of Breckenridge one politicians said he could not win, the American People will never vote in as President a person who spelled Negro with two gs.
Mid-1800 political humor is still with us.

3. Keep the lines of communication open |
|
She may be inclined to listen and learn right now. You don't have to wallop her, but a few well-chosen facts that she can see for herself could go a long way toward making her change of heart a permanent rather than a temporary thing. The chances are very good that on quite a number of issues, Democrats are pursuing an agenda much more in line with her interests than anything the Republicans are doing.

45. That is one of their main themes for scaring the shit out of themselves |
|
ie, that TPTB, the jack booted thugs, have plans to come for them and lock them up in detention camps. They scream about Obama being a new Hitler, who will change the laws and soon require them to have an id that identifies them as christian white republicans, so that the round up will be easier. The craziest think any kind of national id is the MARK OF THE BEAST, and plan to resist it by force, if necessary.
I can only imagine that some are horrified to see that this kind of "papers, please" nonsense was initiated by the republican state of Arizona. They don't care about the plight of a hispanic whose only reason to be suspect is the color of his skin; rather they have a sinking feeling that they could be next, according to whichever persecution fantasy from which they suffer.
And it is making their skin crawl. It is one thing to rail and whine from the safety of your computer or around the watercooler while on break at your nice safe job about TPTB coming for you, and another to see the reality of TPTB in AZ come after a group using a completely random identifier to see who they can round up.
Hey repubs - it isn't fiction anymore. And no reason why your group can't be the next target.

It's the sanity that matters at this point more than the specific policies. Reasonable people can disagree about things like the role of government or how to clear up the environment. But it's the crazies and the deep denialists who are the real problem.

Where I live in NW Ohio, Republicans can do no wrong. You would think that after living through Bush/Cheney fucking things up on a national and international level and Bob Taft fucking things up at the state level, these people would at least take a step back and tone it down. If anything, they're MORE belligerent than ever...Democrat BAD. Republican GOOD. I blame it primarily on this steady diet of Beck-Limbaugh-Hannity-Faux Snooze that's available.

|
been taken over by screech monkeys. My Mom, who voted R her entire life, could not vote for bush the second time around, she refused to vote for McCain...she just left the presidential option blank.
If the GOP believes they can win an election, and overturn congress by saying "no", and having, as their only option returning to GOP control to continue what they did to bring the country to complete disaster, the delusion is monumental.
"Mrs. Republican" is just one of hundreds of thousands that have realized the "party of Lincoln" has become nothing more than a conduit for wealth to gain more, and everyone else is to just work and die...keeping the "American Dream" just that, and never a reality for those who aspire to do better.

73. Ah yes ... the "Party of Lincoln" ... in 1864, with the Civil War ongoing, ... |
|
the Republican Party chose John C. Fremont as its candidate, rather than the sitting President. Lincoln cobbled together something called the "Union Party", and Fremont then withdrew as a candidate.
Republicans prefer to omit that from their history, with the excuse that the 1864 R convention did not represent the "real" Republican party, but only a bunch of extremists who had wrangled their way into power. Thankfully, nothing like that could **ever** happen again. :eyes:

Sometimes when I'm too frustrated by idiots who refuse to see the truth, I remind myself that there were some people back at the end of WWII, standing in the rubble, waving Nazi flags as the Allies came through.
So... there are always some lost causes. Best to let them be and focus on what's the next right thing to do. (Easier said than done, I know.... I'm one of the worst when it comes to patient forbearance with idiots. I'm hoping my own good advice will sink in someday :P )

51. It's time to stop defining Democrat as not Republican, and return to a sharper differentiation of |
|
policy. We don't win when the Republican's lose unless WE get policies favorable to US. And as with "Health Care Reform," favorable to us is a hell of a lot more that giving us over to corporations by force of law with only suggestions of control in return. I am not any happier by our War Machine being given over half the budget by Democrats than I would be by Republicans.
Neither Party has the vision to address our core problems, and returning proven bad performers to office is our affirmation of their bad leadership.

A lot of the rightward movement of the Democrats has been due to the ascendancy of the Republicans. The R's seemed unstoppable so the D's moved right. As the R's explode, that will make it easier to move the D's left, since "going right" becomes an obvious failure.

whole political continuum. Now we debate if the Democratic Party is Liberal or not. Hell, that shouldn't be a debate. I would rather have the Democrats on the ropes and government moving to the Left than the race to the Right that we have now.

81. This kind of thing takes time to unwind. |

If history is any guide, the D's will not contain the entire political spectrum. Either two things will happen:
1) The D's remain relatively 'left', and a new right party, or reformed Republican party, takes over the right. 2) The D's take over the right, and a new party forms on the left. Much like the original formation of the Republican party after the self-destruction of the Whigs.
Either way, there will be a major 'left' party. And frankly, I don't care what it's called.
Disarray on the right only helps the situation, as they'll fail to 'get their message out', leaving the people on the left as the only ones 'getting their message out'.

the Ratigan show. He denied the stalling and obstruction of course, but agreed that stiff regulations need to be "negotiated."

60. I drop the '95% got a tax reduction' bomb |

when I come across a "big gubment tax&spend Democrat" whiner. They hate facts.
That and; Reagan doubled the size of government, Bush too. Clinton reduced it.

71. One by one is the key. When they get out of the group mentality |
|
and talk without being defensive thaty actually will sometimes see the light. For my sister-in laws it was Sarah Palin. They were totally against Obama until she came on board during the election and now are strong supporters of Obama and een make comments about the republicans (they are over 50 and were life long republicans. People are starting to think instead of just following...all good.

Didn't happen - you are vying for street cred and making Democraticunderground.com bad in the process. It is HIGHLY unlikely that a repuke would step out on the porch and announce to all known Democrats that the repuks are "evil Wall Street" Scalawags.
In other words, you are full of shit.
Stop making Democratunderground.com *YOUR* playground for your unsubstantiated political fantasies. You can do better than that and *WE* are far more superior to those types of fantasies.

street cred for DU. She didn't make an "announcement" as you imply, she was frustrated and when asked why she just made the statement as to why. Perhaps in your world it sounds "unlikely" but she was clearly annoyed and told us why. I respected her honesty. DU is not my playground nor do I have political fantasies. As far as you being more superior to fantasies, I highly question that. You sound like a loon.
