I hung up on my daughter's grandparents this morning.
I'm still fuming.

Yes, it was about Arizona. They wanted to explain away abandoning the US Constitution with "all the problems they're having down there." How it wasn't any different than "they can take away your laptop at the Canada border." Said mistaken identity happens all the time, no big deal. I yelled. My daughter started crying. I hung up on them.

Goddamn it. I never hang up on people.

I'm watching some fucking Elmo. :argh:

6. Not Your Parents, I Hope
You don't say so in your post, but my guess is that the people you hung up on are not your parents, but the "other set" of your daughter's grandparents.

I hope you are able to insulate your daughter from the hate and bigotry of that set of her grandparents.

10. I hear ya!
I have those same in-laws. We had dinner on Sunday, and we ate, cleaned up and left within an hour. I was so angry I was in tears, cretins!!! Every damn one of them!
We live in Az and I've decided that I'm going to make buttons to wear when I'm out in public that says something like "I do not support SB 1070" or "I don't support racial profiling" something to set me apart from the racist mother fuckers. I cant take it!!!
I was at the grocery store last night and the hispanic kid who was cashiering didn't even want to look at me, I know how that feels. My partner and I were so damn depressed the day after the election because Az had voted against gays in the Az constitution. We didn't know who among our friends and family had voted against us, you just feel so alone. We were at the park last night with my mom and there were two hispanic guys near us and they were fishing. My mom walked up to them and apologized. She told them that she was so sorry and that she doesn't support this bullshit. They thanked her and talked for awhile. They seemed very relieved to hear that.

14. Have you considered therapy over your anger issues?
No offense...but regardless of you and their views on this issue you shouldn't be yelling at them in front of your daughter so much that your daughter starts crying.

No matter what is going on in the country and politics, if you can't control yourself and your emotions at least don't let your daughter witness it.

Now he HAS made the mistake of sending me something to provoke copied to the rest of his good ol' boy list and even some deep stix family, and I'll respond to the whole list.

Most everyone gets some kind of award for being deployed unless they royally fuck up. So unless its a silver star that are still actually pretty hard to get, then yeah he probably didn't really do much.

24. That's why I don't discuss politics or political issues with close friends and family -
- as differences in opinion can cause huge riffs and things can be said that can't be taken back. Even if our opinions are different, they're my family and the family of my children and I don't think a political issue is worth the damage.

I just change the subject and say "we will agree to disagree" and let it go.

29. Hum, I wonder what problems you Arizona inlaws are having?
I live next door in New Mexico. I know there are undocumented aliens here, but I haven't noticed any big problems with most of the undocumented aliens who came here to work. I'll be honest, I'm sure some of the people who have worked for us on our home were undocumented aliens. I don't have any proof except that they always showed up on time, worked hard, finished their work quickly, did a great job and then thanked us for paying them a fair wage. I also have had people work on my house that I knew for sure were born in U.S., and the same couldn't be said about them. Now just what is the problem here?

31. Yelling. Daughter crying. Hanging up on in laws. Arguing about it.
Yep, you did everything wrong in that episode.

1. Don't behave like that in front of your daughter. It's irresponsible and it teaches bad behavior.

2. Why would you need to yell in a phone conversation about anything? Yelling as a form of communication is appropriate only at sporting events.

3. Yelling at your in laws? About politics? If your relatives don't agree with you about politics, don't feel a need to fight it out. They have their right to their point of view, same as you.

4. Hanging up on your in laws? Over this? Be an adult.

35. I agree... to an extent.
It's not right to behave like this in front of any child; however we, as readers of this post, do not know what led up to this argument. If the OP's daughter's grandparents are anything like my parents, then they'll argue with you day and night over how great Fox News is and Glenn Beck, oh what a doll! (Pardon my gagging right now)... No matter what the conversation is about, my father seems to turn it into his political views are correct and the only way to rightfully think.

I'm sorry, but eventually there is going to be a straw that breaks this camel's back. If this were the case with the OP, then I could easily justify telling them how smelly their shit truly is.

37. Everyone has relatives who disagree with them.
Edited on Wed Apr-28-10 02:36 PM by TexasObserver
I decide what I will talk about to others, and I see no point in having the never-ending argument with relatives whose politics and religious beliefs differ from mine. Don't have the conversation.

I cannot imagine arguing about such things over the phone with any relative with whom I have disagreements. It's unnecessary and counter productive.

There's a role played by each party to such intrafamily battles.

If they can't follow your request not to talk about such things, it's simple. "Hey, love to talk, but I've got to go. See ya. Bye."
